Easy to learn, Easy to work, Easy to play. Asus has brought the little Eee series netbook back from the doldrums to compete once again in the small, affordable laptop category. And the company is hitting hard, too, with the introduction of the Asus EeeBook X205TA packing the Intel Atom Z3735F processor under the hood; which is the newest version for 2016. For the money, choosing this little laptop that could seems like a no-brainer.
If you remember, Asus was the forward-thinking company that started the whole netbook craze back in 2007. After a two-year hiatus from this segment (due to declining sales), Asus joins the netbook revival with the EeeBook X205TA delivering a full Windows experience for a very aggressive price; which suggests that Asus had it right all along, and the EeeBook is an excellent machine that was just ahead of its time.
The Color Options
It comes in three colors: red, white, gold as well as the magnificently, moody blue color featured in this article, which we’ll be looking at in this review. The color shimmers with just a hint of purple under direct light. The Asus X205TA synthesizes the simple, refined look of more expensive laptops into a streamlined plastic body that features soft, rounded edges with a smooth matte finish many users will appreciate.
The low weight of the X205TA does not require maximum strength, so the stability of the chassis is sturdy but not great as it is susceptible to flexing. Which begs the question: Just how much power can you expect from this small wonder?
Slimmer and lighter than its competitors, the X205TA comes in at a featherweight 2.16 pounds (0.98kg) and 17.5 millimeters thick. It’s a lightweight laptop that won’t way you down on your daily commute.
Screen Size and Resolution
You won’t find any ‘skimping’ on display quality like the screen quality you might find with some other brands for their budget machines. Instead Asus knocks it out of the park with an 11.6-inch LED Backlit, HD display with a resolution of 1366 x 768 and 720 pixels per inch. The X205TA produces 217 nits of brightness, which is higher than some of its competitors. But it does have limitations. The color range seems somewhat limited, and the laptop struggles with color accuracy. But this doesn’t handicap the movie watching experience. The X205TA still outperforms its competitors with vivid colors and legible text. You can totally enjoy your HD movies without a hint of stutter. However, such movies with high bit rates might prove taxing for the unit.
Webcam performance is dismal. The 402p webcam is weak. Images are generally pixelated with loss of detail and splotchy texture.
Although the familiar Chiclet-style keys are well spaced with fairly shallow travel that get the job done, the keyboard deck is a bit on the cramped side. However, it’s well suited for long typing sessions.
The touchpad is a large, single slab of plastic that’s disproportionately sized for such a small unit. We wish that the laptop maker would have considered this incongruity in relation to the keyboard before approving the bigger than average touchpad. Though we suppose this was Asus’ way of addressing an issue in the last generations of netbooks where touchpad size was an issue.
The mouse response is generally smooth and precise. But we couldn’t help but notice inconsistent Multi-Touch gesture recognition when it came to using two-finger scrolling, even after resetting to default.
The Atom Bay Trail processor is more powerful than previous generations. Yet it manages to be efficient, eliminating the need for a fan. The 1.33 GHz Intel Atom Z3735 quad-core processor, with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of flash storage (shared with tablets) may not look like much, but it’s enough to easily handle most of your basic web browsing and streaming needs with a Max Turbo Boost Speed of 1.83 GHz. More complicated computing tasks, however, will send it to task. But multi-page browsing will not slow it down.
As stated above, the X205TA offers 32GB of eMMc flash storage. Only 21GB are available to the user, however. Casual gameplay is handled more nimbly than graphics heavy titles. Unfortunately, huge amounts of data cannot be stored on the machine. We recommend investing in an external hard drive or using Cloud systems.
Asus Web Storage offers 500GB of free cloud storage for 2 years and comes with a 1-year subscription to full versions of Word, Excel, Outlook and other MS Office products. Or you can opt for the FREE one-year subscription to Microsoft’s Cloud storage platform, OneDrive, which give you a whopping 1TB of space.
The Asus X205TA features 2 USB 2.0 ports on the right profile of the slim chassis, with a microSD reader, micro HDMI port and combo headphone/mic jack on the left. The lack of a USB 3.0 port is the only downside we could find.
The 802.11 b/g/n (1×1) Wi-Fi adapter, including Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity is a dual band compatible adapter that transmits in either 2.4 or 5 GHz bands, which gives the X205TA an impressive range that far exceeds even more expensive laptops.
Battery life from the 2 Cell Lithium Ion battery is astronomical in this unit when compared to other laptops in this tier. You should expect 6 to 12 hours of battery life between charges, depending on use.
The Asus EeeBook series X205TA is a game changer that sets a new benchmark for what a laptop in this tier should be. It feels like a premium device, without the obvious price penalty. We love the minimalist design and solid screen. The matte finish is sharp and classy. The soft plastic is easy to grip making it more sophisticated than its competitors. The battery life is simply epic. It has an 11-inch screen with a sleek design that gives you the capabilities to tackle all your everyday computing needs. It’s Energy Star Certified, and even without a fan the X205TA comes in well below the 95-degree comfort threshold for laptops in this class, which makes it an industry leader among budget laptops.
Why We Like this EeeBook
Some flaws include a matte surface that accumulates fingerprints the way a teenager in a shiny red sports car collects traffic tickets. (It takes more than a casual pass with a cleaning cloth to get rid of them.) But, if you are in the market for a budget laptop, it will take a lot of effort for competitors to unseat this little giant for the price. It’s the sleekest budget laptop in the market with an appearance even serious business user will appreciate. This is definately the one to get. The Asus EeeBook X205TA is a productivity powerhouse with features that transcend its humble price.
Our concluding thoughts are that while tablets and even some smart phones are showing increased computing capabilities, the netbook is a form factor that’s gaining in traction and one manufacturers should not dismiss.
