Finding a mid-range laptop that’s the right bang for your buck can be tricky considering variables, like: the flexible prices of laptops at this tier, and manufacturers who don’t always make the compromises that still deliver value.
HP ProBooks are underrated mainstream notebooks aimed at budget conscious business users. With a form factor that offers a straight-forward design to help you get right down to business, the HP ProBook 455 G3 Series, with the AMD Quad-Core A10-8700P processor, is a machine that dials up just the right price-to-performance ratio. You get solid build quality with a premium feel and stylish design that doesn’t draw attention to itself.
The ProBook 455 G3 offers a superb working experience with an elegant and tough chassis. Good keyboard and touchpad. And an M.2 SSD slot (which is rare to find at this price point).
The 15-inch ProBook shares the same design language and materials with the 14-inch version. The rounded corners give it a shape that’s consistent with other budget laptop lines. The lid is black matte with a slightly rubberized texture to provide a secure grip, nice feel and relatively good sturdiness. The combination matte-black plastic and metal materials provide great contrast with the reflective HP logo positioned dead center of the lid; lending the laptop a minimalist approach to an upscale, professional appearance.
At 4.7 pounds (2.217kg) and .98-inches (24.8 millimeters), the ProBook 455 G3 is not the most backpack friendly laptop out there. And it’s thicker than the 14-inch variant which is only .83-inches (21.1mm). But it still feels light and easy to carry; making it a fantastic system built for travel.
Screen Size and Resolution
The ProBook 455 G3’s 15.6-inch screen is perfect for getting down to business. Yet small enough to go with you anywhere business takes you. It has a diagonal viewing angle with anti-glare flat display and LED back-lighting, making use of an energy-efficient TN panel. The WXGA 1366 x 768 resolution comes in handy for watching HD videos. But is far from impressive. Though the display only uses half of the sRGB gamut, it should be sufficient for office work and general browsing. Photo editors should look elsewhere,, however. Even when you max out the brightness color contrast and saturation are not impressive, making it challenging to see your work (especially when work calls you outdoors).
The keyboard deck is reinforced in a brushed-aluminum pattern that adds rigidity and resists flex, while still managing to feel nice to touch. You’ll find that the keyboard offers ample room, thanks to the chiclet-spaced keys which include a number pad. The keys are textured instead of smooth… (this is a design feature you’ll either be able to live with, or down-right hate). Keyboard travel is functional with low travel. Strokes are crisp with good spacing with excellent ergonomics. Our only complaint is that the keyboard isn’t back-lit.
The trackpad quality could be much better. The positioning is off-center, but doesn’t diminish usability. And though responsive, it’s sometimes unwilling to register Multi-Touch gestures.
Overall not a bad performer. The AMD A10-8700P with 2MB cache processor and four cores is clocked at a base speed of 1.8GHz, with a maximum speed of 3.2 GHz. It’s designed for efficient cost, and low power consumption, which we appreciate. The system runs fast, and will do most everything you want it to, including run multiple applications smoothly. The AMD A10-8700P is great for office work, web browsing and media. You’ll get affordable performance with the energy-efficient AMD A -series APU which is robust enough for most of your multitasking needs.
The ProBook 455 G3 can handle multiple open browsers with ease. But more complex computing will send the system to task as this is a mid-level laptop that relies on an integrated GPU. And even though an integrated GPU is not the greatest setup for gameplay, simple titles will do just fine, while more challenging games will require medium to very low settings.
If you regularly work with a tome of documents that you need to call at your fingertips within a moments notice, you’ll love the ProBook 455 G3 large memory which favors space over everything else. It’s a must have for users managing and running large files. The whopping 16GB of DDR3L SDRAM is above standard for even premium laptops. It allows you to quickly access frequently used files and data with multitasking capabilities, (you can open many tabs and run several programs simultaneously and not be slowed down.) And, the mechanical, 1TB of hard drive gives you plenty of storage space that won’t leave you stranded wondering where to store all your data.
The ProBook 455 G3 won’t let you miss out on connectivity, either. You’ll find one 1.4 HDMI port and a VGA connector, and a pair of USB 2.0 ports, perfect for connecting to a projector during presentations on the unit’s left profile. And you get two USB 3.0 ports, LAN and 3.5 mm jack to help you get connected to all the hard drives, printers, memory card readers you need on the right. (One of the USB 3.0 ports doubles as an ‘always-on’ charging port for compatible USB devices.) Let us not forget to mention that an optical driver is also furnished should the need for it arise.
The single band 802.11 b/g/n WiFi is built in for added functionality in the form of wireless networking with Bluetooth 4.0 technology so you can connect additional compatible peripherals. Unfortunately, the WiFi card will only operate on 2.4g, which means you won’t get the most your Wi-Fi provider has to offer. Speaking of connecting additional peripherals, it also come with a Gigabit Ethernet to help you stay productive.
The 4-cell 44 Whr Li-ion battery gives you long battery run time. You should expect between 5 and 7 hours, depending on use.
The HP ProBook 455 G3 W4E07UT#ABA series with AMD Quad-Core A10-8700P processor is a solid machine that proves a compelling choice for desktop work. The low pixel resolution stretched across the 15-inch screen was the greatest offender as it made for a dull display. It’s a purposeful laptop that’s just short of meeting all of your entertainment needs. As we see it, these are the only major factors standing in the way of making the HP ProBook a decent, but not the best machine. But none of these reasons are why you would consider it anyway.
But Wait, There’s More…
In spite of its shortcomings, we highly recommend this laptop. The HP ProBook 455 G3 offers rugged build quality, powerful hardware, good port selection, with a good choice of materials and overall design. Yet it’s portable enough to take with you wherever you go. 16GB of RAM and humongous storage are standout features that are only enhanced by a solid processor and long battery life. (Business users may want to upgrade to the Window 10 Professional to unlock additional features.) It’s a business-focused laptop for anyone in the market for high performance that’s much better than other HP laptops, at a relatively competitive price. Get this laptop because it’s an excellent product that can meet your expectations, while offering incredible value at an outstanding price.
