With so many laptops entering the 17-inch notebook arena. The HP 17 laptop still manages to stand out as the number one choice for most users, and it’s not hard to see why. It’s an affordable laptop for the office or home with an Intel Core i5 CPU capable of most anything you can throw at it. You also get 16GB of RAM and a whopping 1TB SSD.

The simplicity of the laptop is where its charm lies. It’s big and attractive with a chassis that’s made of both aluminum and plastic, giving it a more rigid feel than if it were made entirely of plastic. And except for the display bezel, the entire surface is covered in what HP calls a structured net pattern, which we think is pretty cool. While there is no maintenance flap, you can take off the bottom of the keyboard deck by removing the screws to get to the two open RAM slots that make it easy to upgrade memory (up to 32GB). Expandable too is the storage capacity.

Even though the HP 17 comes with a 1TB SSD (which goes to show just how cheap SSD storage is becoming). There’s enough room for up to 2TB of SSD storage for faster data access speed. You also get an Intel Core i5-1135G7 CPU with Intel Turbo Boost Technology and integrated Iris Xe Graphics providing all the image quality you need for all day Internet browsing.

In terms of connections, there are two SuperSpeed USB Type-A ports with a 5Gbps signaling rate. There’s also one USB 2.0 Type-A port, HDMI, Ethernet, a headphone/mic jack combo, a multi-format SD media card reader, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2 combo.

At 15.71 inches across, it’s wide with enough room for a full-sized keyboard to go along with its huge 17.3-inch display. It’s not too thick either measuring .99 inches tall with the lid closed. The TUF Gaming F17’s chassis is primarily made of plastic rather than metal. The biggest visual element throughout the design is angles, which gives it an edgy look that makes it feel more intentional than a solid sheet of plastic.

From its sleek, gamer-focused design to its large inviting screen, the TUF Gaming F17 is a quality machine for casual gaming. It leans heavily on display quality with an IPS panel that comes with a 144Hz refresh rate. Most games will run optimally at mid-to-low settings.

To prove its truly entry-level gaming status, it even comes with a rather entry-level Intel Core i5-10300H CPU and Nvidia GTX 1650 Ti graphics. And for productivity performance when you’re not gaming, you also get an 8GB DDR4 RAM and 512GB PCIe SSD.

Another benefit of the large screen is that there’s extra room on the deck for additionally buttons and controls. You get a full-sized RGB backlit keyboard complete with a numeric keypad off to the side.

The Asus VivoBook 17 is a large business-class notebook with enough AMD Ryzen muscle to make short work of all your most important business-related tasks. It’s a welcome reminder that a self-imposed price limit need not restrict your choices to a machine that’ll struggle to get through most basic tasks.

Clad in a stylish silver chassis inside and out, the VivoBook 17 looks modern from every angle. Like the Asus TUF Gaming F17 above, it weighs about 5 pounds. But the main attraction here is a roomy 17.3-inch, anti-glare LED-backlit display. It has an 1600×900 HD resolution that’s rated at a lowish 250 nits of brightness.

Under the hood, there’s more than enough power for everyday computing. You get a 10th generation Intel Quad-Cor i7-1065G7 CPU, 16GB DDR4 RAM and a 512GB capacity PCIe SSD. It’s an impressive loadout for a big screen laptop you can get at this price.

A comfortable keyboard with sturdy key switches and a dedicated numeric pad takes up most of the bottom deck. The buttonless touchpad is high quality with a satisfyingly sturdy hinge mechanism. And it glides and taps smoothly with comfortable clicks.

Besides the screen real estate that a large laptop affords, there’s also room for more input/output ports. On the left edge are two USB Type-A ports. On the right is a third USB-A port, a USB-C port, HDMI video output, a 3.5mm headphone jack and a microSD card slot. You also get Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 4.2.

4. Acer Aspire 5 A517

The Acer Aspire 5 offers a bright 17.3-inch screen and scores points with an 11th Gen Intel i7-1165G7 CPU.

The chassis is made of sand-blasted aluminum, which not only feels good and looks high-quality. But effectively protects the laptop against the accumulation of fingerprints. The hinges are pleasantly tight and able to support the display in every position. When you open the lid, the keyboard raises at a slight angle for a more comfortable typing experience.

The 17.3-inch display is supported by a 1920×1080 pixel resolution. It also has a matte IPS panel, which limits on-screen reflections, making it easy to use in bright environments. Great performance for everyday multitasking comes from an Intel Core i7-1165G7 CPU with integrated Intel Iris Xe graphics, 16GB DDR4 RAM and a 512GB NVMe SSD.

Thanks to the size of the laptop, there’s enough room for a keyboard including a number pad. The backlit keys are easy to read and pleasantly large, which makes for a comfortable typing feel. The offset touchpad below is also smooth to use. Additionally, the click mechanism for the two mouse buttons sounds high quality and pleasantly quiet. And there’s even a fingerprint reader nestled into the top left corner of the touchpad for security.

Most of the ports are concentrated on the left side of the device and include, an HMDI port, two USB-A ports, and one USB-C port. On the opposite side is another USB-A port as well as a 3.5mm audio jack. And a Kensington lock slot. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi 6.

Most everything about the Dell Inspiron 17 3000 (3793) says economical. But if you’re a cash-strapped user looking for a 17-inch laptop, while it may lack the frills of a backlit keyboard or fingerprint reader. This Inspiron series allows you the ability to enjoy a large panel laptop at a relatively low price.

With big bezels surrounding the big 17.3-inch screen, the Inspiron 17 3000 (3793) is unapologetically bulky compared to many laptops on the list, which is par for the course considering the price. It’s heavier too than most 17-inch laptops on the list at 6.2 pounds.

Color reproduction is fair on the 1920×1080 resolution panel. Image detail is good enough for productivity work. Dell’s CinemaColor utility allows you to try movie, sports, animation and evening presets. You can even make minimal adjustment to saturation, temperature and contrast to tune the image quality in the way you like.

Equipped with a 10th gen Intel Core i3-1005G1 CPU, 8GB of RAM and a 1TB MHD (mechanical hard drive), you’ll never mistake it for a high-end or even midrange notebook. But there’s enough hardware on tap to get the job done for many tasks.

You get acres of room around the keyboard, even with the numeric keypad. The keyboard is comfortable, providing a quiet typing feel. And the buttonless touchpad glides and taps smoothly.

For the price, you won’t get Thunderbolt 3 or 4. You don’t even get USB Type-C. But the laptop does come with two USB 3.1 Type-A ports, HDMI and an Ethernet port and an audio jack on the left side. On the right you’ll find an SD card slot and a USB 2.0 port. You also get Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth to handle wireless communications.

The price alone makes this unit one of the best big screen laptops on the market. It’s another affordable option that can handle the basics with eye-catching good looks and powerful performance. The Lenovo IdeaPad 3 is the one to consider when you want your dollar to stretch further.

The chassis reflects a solid build quality and reassuring feel with a screen hinge that feels robust. Even though the body is made of plastic, it feels durable. And there’s plenty more strengths worth shouting about!

The IdeaPad 3 comes with a 17.3-inch display running at an HD+ resolution of 1600×900 pixels. It’s reasonably bright and crisp. The bezels surrounding it are thicker than the ones you’ll find on some of the laptops on the list. Also viewing angles and maximum brightness reflect the price. But a nice touch is the privacy shield on the webcam just above the display.

Also on-board is a 10th Gen Intel Core i5-1035G1 CPU, which is more than enough to get you through some everyday computing tasks. It also comes fitted with 12GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD, more than enough room for multitasking. The hardware on offer is great for everyday computing and web browsing, dealing with emails and spreadsheets with great video streaming capabilities.

Typing experience on the full-sized keyboard with number pad feels soft, yet substantial. The keys are well-spaced. There’s no backlighting. But you get the usual array of shortcuts on the function keys at the top for volume, brightness and the like. The touchpad also feels quite substantial and responsive.

For connectivity, you get three USB-A ports, HDMI-out for an external monitor, a 3.5mm headphone jack and an SD card slot.

7. Acer Aspire 7 A717

If you’re looking for more 17-inch laptops with gaming aspirations, look no further than the Acer Aspire 7 A717. It’s a multimedia gaming hybrid with a GTX 1060 graphics card and a fast quad-core CPU. But all this gaming prowess is optimized with regards to the price.

It has a brushed metal surface that’s susceptible to fingerprints. And the rest of the case is made of nonslip plastic. The base is quite sturdy with a thick and equally rigid lid. The hinge holding up the display is nice and tight.

The 17.3-inch display is one of the brightest at under $1000 with a max brightness of 357 nits. Contrast is good with acceptable color accuracy. That means this notebook may not be the best choice for activities like photo editing.

The hardware on offer is rather standard gaming fare including an Intel Core i7-8750H CPU, 16GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. While not the latest and greatest hardware, this is certainly enough to get some midrange gaming done.

Unlike other gaming notebooks from the likes of MSI, Razor and Alienware, there’s no RGB backlighting or programmable macro keys. But the keyboard deck is only slightly narrower than a desktop keyboard, which accounts for the size of the full-numberpad. Otherwise, typing is a comfortable experience with well-spaced keys. The touchpad is sufficiently large too with decent sliding properties. And decent precision and response times.

Two of the four USB ports are USB 2.0, one is a USB 3.1 Gen 1 port. And the other features a USB-C connection. A fold-out Ethernet port is available as is a full-size HDMI port. The SD card reader is connected via USB 3.0.

8. HP Pavilion 17 Gaming Laptop

Another 17-inch laptop under 1000 dollars with gaming aspirations is the HP Pavilion 17 Gaming Laptop which sits just below the Omen series. In fact, the Pavilion Gaming Laptop is an entry-level peer to the Omen, without the mainstream gaming branding.

The difference between the Pavilion Gaming Laptop and Omen series can be seen, however, in the details of the aesthetics. It looks every bit as good as an Omen, but where the Omen opts for a brushed-metal look inside and out. The Pavilion goes with a matte-black finish. If you like a less in-your-face gamer presence. You’ll prefer the Pavilion, even in this emerald-jewel-toned variant.

You get a 1080p IPS screen with 144Hz refresh rate. Unfortunately, its missing the 362 nits of brightness that the Omen offers. But it’s a rarity for budget machines to come equipped with bright displays. Instead, the Pavilion Gaming Laptop tops out at 250 nits plugged in (200 unplugged). But this is no problem, especially when the lights are off.

The pricing is mainstream too thanks to the hardware on offer. Inside is an Intel Core i5-10300H CPU, 8GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD with 32GB of Optane memory and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti graphics card.

This gaming laptop may not be for you, however, if dedicated left- and right mouse-click buttons are a must for you. You can always plug in a gaming mouse. Otherwise, you’ll be settling for the tap-to-click buttons integrated into the touchpad. The keyboard is satisfying to use and comes with a single-color lighting.

On the ports side of things, the Pavilion Gaming Laptop comes with two USB 3.0 ports, a 3.5mm headphone jack, HDMI-out, an additional USB-A 3.0 port, Ethernet, an SD card reader and a USB-C port.

But if you want a proper gaming laptop, the MSI GF75 is the perfect large screen budget gamer for you. The GF-series is MSI’s affordable line of gaming laptops boasting an upper mid-range level of performance.

At 0.9-inches thick, it’s competitively thin with a surprisingly high-quality metal surface for a budget gaming laptop. At least at the top of the base unit and back of the display. The bottom of the base unit and the sides are made of plastic. It feels small for a 17-inch gaming laptop. But the design is definitely directed at gamers with red lettered keys and the typical gamer ventilation slots. Total weight without the AC adapter is 4.85 pounds.

The silky smooth 120Hz refresh rate on the 17.3-inch display is the highlight of the IPS panel. Display quality is good. This configuration comes with a 10th Gen Intel Core i5-10300H CPU, 8GB of RAM, a 512GB PCIe SSD and Nvidia GTX 1650 graphics. It’s one of the least expensive gaming laptops you can get with an H-series processor.

Keyboard layout is typical MSI with large keys and red backlighting. There are three levels of backlighting, or you can turn it off entirely. Typing feel is comfortable with minimal clatter. The touchpad also feels very good and offers satisfactory gliding properties.

You can expect to find the minimum of necessary ports on the GF75, including a 3.5mm headphone/mic jack combo, two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports, a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port, Ethernet, HDMI 1.4 and two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type A ports on the left. For connectivity you get Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.

The chassis is made of plastic and appears to be quite robust. Despite a small screen bezel, the display lid is rigid. Except for a rough textured surface around the bottom of the keyboard, the rest of the chassis is smooth. One fantastic element of this notebook is that once you remove all the screws on the bottom deck to access the internals you’ll find an empty SATA slot, a single RAM slot and the SSD can be accessed. You can even replace the Wifi module.

The 17.3-inch display not only has a native resolution of 1920×1080. But it also comes with IPS for wide viewing angles no matter what angle you’re viewing the screen from. It also comes with a maximum brightness of 234 nits, which is average for this category.

This model comes with an AMD Ryzen 5 5500U APU, 8GB of DDR4 RAM, a 128GB SSD and a 1TB MHD for speed and large storage capacity. This setup makes the VivoBook S17 S712 suitable for various office applications. It even has enough horsepower to run simple or older games on lower settings.

The keys are very well-sized and include a numeric keypad. A good size too is the ClickPad. It’s large enough for comfortable use with no problems navigating the mouse pointer or registering clicks. There’s even a fingerprint reader in the top right corner of the touchpad.

A standard assortment of ports includes a USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C port, microSD card reader Connectivity includes Wi-Fi 5.

Best 17-inch Laptop under 1000 Buying Guide

Most 17-inch laptops under $1000 fall into three camps of users: general purpose, business and gamers. Proving that if you want an easy-on-the-eyes, panoramic view of your workspace or playing field. Then a 17-inch laptop is definitely the way to go.

There’s no two ways about it, 17-inch laptops represent some of the performance leaders of the entire portable computer universe. The chassis is large enough to accommodate the most powerful CPUs and graphics cards in a mobile device. There’s plenty of room for the ports you need. As well as spacious room for a near-desktop class keyboard. Below are some of the aspects you’ll want to take into consideration when choosing one.

Resolution

No matter what you’d like a 17-inch class laptop for, you’ll benefit from choosing the right screen type. A solid choice is one with an (IPS) in-plane switching panel. The latter will give you the sharpest colors and contrast, as well as the widest viewing angles. You can choose between an HD+ (1600×900) or a Full HD 1080p resolution.

Refresh Rate

If you’ll be gaming on your 17-inch laptop, then how often the screen is able to redraw an image will be important to you for a smooth gaming experience. Most standard laptop LCDs have a refresh rate of 60Hz. This means that the image is redrawn 60 times per second. While that’s good enough for most use cases, you can choose from gaming level 17-inchers with a high refresh rate of 120 to 144Hz displays.

Keyboards

Many gaming 17-inch gaming laptops at this price only offer monochromatic backlit keyboard with at most two to three levels of backlighting. But since there’s so much room on the keyboard deck, you get a desktop-level of comfort as well as features you don’t often get from laptops like a full numberpad.

CPU

As mentioned, 17-inch laptops fall into general purpose, business and gaming laptops with an audience of users supporting them. While you will find models either with an Intel Core i3, Core i7 or AMD APU. Most at this price range rely heavily on Intel’s Core i5 series of CPUs, which isn’t a bad thing considering the workhorse like nature of Intel’s Core i5 CPUs. Processor counts vary depending on the model of Core i5.

RAM

8GB of RAM is the bare minimum for any application. However, you can find quite a few 17-inch laptops for under 1000 dollars with a 16GB DDR4 RAM, which gives you more than enough room for practically anything you want to do. And you’ll also find systems that give you the opportunity to increase the amount of RAM you have your needs change.

Unless you have buckets of money to spend, you’ll want to look into the specific RAM requirements of the games you play most often and the applications you plan to run to gauge how much you should be spending on memory.

Storage

In a machine of this size, you should be looking for a PCIe SSD (solid-state drives) and space for a 2.5-inch hard drive. Since a laptop of this size can support more storage units why should you ever run out of storage space?

17-inch laptops have room for both types of drives. Some models may come with space for an additional drive, like an additional 2.5-inch MHD or an M.2 SSD. We recommend storing your operating system and favorite applications in the SSD. And reserving the roomier (slower) mechanical hard drive for games and data.

The most performance-conscious 17-inchers use slightly quicker PCIe rather than SATA connections for the SSDs. When it comes to PCIe SSDs, you may also see NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express), which tells you that you’re getting the fastest SSD.

How much storage should you get? If you’re opting for system with only an SSD, you shouldn’t go for any offers less than 1TB. 256 to 512GB capacity is acceptable if you’ll be using the SSD as a boot drive with a larger hard drive.

Graphics

Lagging and stuttering just won’t cut it during an all-out a melee. GPU strength is more important if you’ll be using one of these luggables for gaming. While they’re not designed to play the latest and greatest titles at speeds. Laptops at this price are equipped with the necessary hardware for at least 60 frames per second, which is double the rate for minimally smooth gameplay.

For normal everyday computing, including work that involves spread sheets, editing documents and the like. The integrated graphics will work just fine. On the gaming side, Nvidia dominates mobile GPUs with the current GeForce RTX 30 series. You won’t find top-of-the-line GPUs like Nvidia’s GeForce RTX series in these laptops. But the older GTX series are certainly good enough for up to high midrange gaming. Higher model numbers (as well as higher prices) will net you more speed and higher frame rates.

Battery Life

You really shouldn’t expect a good battery life from these behemoths. Due to the power of the components, these plus-sized notebooks are designed to run on AC power for most of the time you’re using it. So, expect to be tethered to a power outlet often. When it comes to these machines, a 4-hour runtime unplugged is considered fantastic. But if you’re looking for notebooks with exceptional battery endurance, check out these machines.

Ports

You’re purchasing a 17-inch monster. There’s absolutely no reason why a laptop of this caliber should come without all the ports you need. There’s certainly enough room. But don’t expect every 17-inch laptop you choose at this price to come with a Thunderbolt 3 or Thunderbolt 4 port. It’s a next level technology that combines the USB-C and DisplayPort functions with daisy-chain support for external docking and storage solutions.

FAQ

Do You Really Need to Go 17-inches?

Obviously, a bigger laptop means your sacrificing the very thing this device is supposed to offer, namely portability. A 17-inch laptop is too big for a briefcase, backpack or roller bag. And it’s too big for more than the occasional transport from room to room. Unwaveringly, gaming laptops are going to be the heaviest models in this universe – some even tip the scales at a backbreaking 10 pounds! And that’s not even including the AC power brick.

Should I Buy My 17-inch Laptop in a Store or Online?

By shopping for a laptop in stores, you get to se exactly what your 17-inch laptop looks like. On the other hand, you can find tons of deals, offers as well as cashback offers at online stores. Plus, there’s the added incentive that if for whatever reason the laptop you choose just doesn’t work for you. Many online stores have programs that’ll allow you to return or exchange it, just like a brick-and-mortar store.
