Our top choice for the best 17-inch laptop under 500 dollars and a real crowd favorite is hands down, the HP NoteBook 17. It’s simple and attractive with a 17.3-inch display and one of the best laptops for a tight budget.

As one of the company’s lowest tier laptop offerings, the NoteBook 17 has a simple, yet not unpleasant design. And since it’s not officiously flashy you can feel confident using it in the office.

Although it looks like it’s made completely of aluminum. It has a smooth well-finished aluminum chassis with a plastic underside.

The 17.3-inch BrightView display is equipped with an HD+ (1600×900) resolution. While it’s not up to the task of photo editing and digital work. You can analyze data on a big screen with a wide color gamut and adequate brightness.

And while you wouldn’t want to use it for gaming or other graphically intense work. This unit is powered by an AMD Athlon Silver 3050 APU, 4GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD and integrated AMD Radeon graphics. It’s a hardware list suitable enough to tackle every day computing tasks.

You get more of that aluminum finish on the keyboard deck. Thanks to the large size of the laptop, the keys are well-spaced. The typing experience is as comfortable as you’d might expect. And the touchpad feels wider than what you would find on a 15-inch laptop – all together, it’s spacious and responsive.

The I/O port selection includes two SuperSpeed USB-A ports each with a 5Gbps signal rate. One SuperSpeed USB-C port also with a 5Gbps signal rate. The HP Pavilion 17 is a solid option if you’re looking for a relatively affordable 17-inch laptop. It’s perfectly fine for taking online classes, Zoom calls and working from home.

HP’s Pavilion laptops are a tier above the company’s NoteBook series. While the Pavilion 17 gets a thinner metal frame with slimmer bezels, some elements of the chassis are dated. But newer design elements come from the higher-end Envy family.

You get a 17.3-inch HD+ Anti-glare display on a TN panel. Viewing angles are narrow, which means you’ll have to sit directly in front of the laptop to see what’s on it clearly.

Elements of the chassis may be dated, but HP makes up for that by throwing in a laundry list of fresh components into the system. For example, inside is an 11th gen Intel Dual-Core i3-1115G4 CPU, 8GB of RAM, Intel HD Graphics and a 256GB SSD with room to upgrade up to 2TB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD. There’s even room to upgrade on-board memory up to 32GB of RAM.

When it comes to ports you get two SuperSpeed USB Type-A ports with a 5Gbps signaling rate. One USB 2.0 Type-A port. An HDMI 1.4b an RJ-45 Ethernet port. One AC smart pin and a headphone/mic jack combo. Wireless connectivity includes AC Wi-Fi.

Pros:

  • slimmer body with thinner bezels
  • solid entry-level hardware
  • full-size keyboard

Cons:

  • no Full HD option at this price
  • an IPS panel is almost a necessity

3. Lenovo IdeaPad 3 17

  • Processor Core: Dual-core (2 Core)

The Lenovo IdeaPad 3 17 is an affordable big screen option to handle your basic tasks. It’s probably the best option on the market at this size and price point.

With otherwise eye-catching good looks, the bezels around the display are distractingly thicker than you’ll find on higher-end laptops. But the overall build quality gives a reassuring feel.

The IdeaPad 3 17 comes with a large 17.3-inch display and 1600×900 pixel resolution. It’s reasonably bright at an affordable price, but images could be clearer. And viewing angles and brightness levels aren’t particularly top-notch.

You’re not going to be able to play demanding games or use it for video production. But powerful performance for everyday computing and Web browsing comes from an Intel Core i3-1115G4 CPU, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD which offers great performance.

Unlike its smaller siblings, here you do get a full-sized keyboard with a number pad. The keys have a soft but substantial feel when you press them down. And they’re well-spaced. While the touchpad is on the small side, it feels responsive.

Another nice touch are the three USB-A ports. You also get an HDMI-out port to hookup an external monitor. A 3.5mm headphone jack and an SD card slot.

Pros:

  • robust, durable build
  • comfortable typing experience
  • responsive touchpad

Cons:

  • screen could be brighter
  • low powered components

4. Lenovo IdeaPad 330-17

Lenovo IdeaPad 330-17 - 17.3" HD - i5-8250U - 8GB - 1TB HDD - Black
  • Brand New in box. The product ships with all relevant accessories

The Lenovo IdeaPad 330-17 is a solid inexpensive 17-inch laptop, and perhaps the cheapest on our list. It does come with some compromises – you’re going to have to do some work after your purchase to get it up to snuf.

It’s made entirely of plastic which works to keep the weight and cost down. You’d expect it to feel cheap, but it doesn’t. And it doesn’t scratch easily either. And it’s lightweight enough that if you have to carry it around, it won’t break your back.

More screen real estate is a necessity for productivity. The IdeaPad 330-17 offers a 17.3-inch display with 1600×900 resolution. Don’t expect to be wowed by it, however.

Part of the compromises is that this model comes with the older 8th generation Intel Core i5-8250U CPU and Integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620. But at least you get 8GB of RAM.

Another downside is that your saddled with a clunky 1TB hard disk rotating at a performance hogging 5400 RPM. Listen, do yourself a favor. If you’re going to opt for this laptop, swap out the MHD for a 512GB SSD to unlock the laptop’s true potential.

As you would expect, the keyboard and touchpad are generously sized. It’s a Lenovo, so the keys offer plenty of travel. But they require a bit of force to register input. They don’t feel stiff, however which is a plus.

Lastly, the touchpad doesn’t use Precision drivers and trying to install them will render the touchpad inoperable. Add a mouse to the list of things to get after purchase.

For connectivity, there are full-sized HDMI, USB-A and Ethernet ports. Unfortunately, the USB-C port only works for data transfers, not display-out or charging.

Pros:

  • cheap
  • easy to upgrade
  • great keyboard
  • full-sized ports

Cons:

  • no precision touchpad
  • limited USB-C port
  • stock MHD is slow

As you’re sorting through the landscape of budget 17-inch laptops, take a look at the Ausus VivoBook 17. While it does use some older hardware, it ticks nearly every other box for a budget large screen laptop.

Clad in a stylish silver finish inside and out, the VivoBook 17 looks modern from every angle. The bezels are slim enough to look like they belong on a $1,000 laptop.

But the star attraction is the 17.3-inch display featuring a rare-for-this-segment 1920×1080 Full HD resolution. That one feature is more than enough to make it one of the best large screen laptops you can by on a budget.

Under the hood is a third generation AMD Ryzen 3 3250U APU, 8GB RAM, a 256GB SSD with integrated AMD Radeon Graphics. That’s just enough power for everyday computing tasks.

The keyboard deck is well laid out with sturdy key switches that make typing a comfortable experience. And of course, there’s enough room for a dedicated number pad.

Recent Asus touchpads have been high-quality. Below the keyboard, the VivoBook 17’s buttonless touchpad is equipped with sturdy hinges that don’t give away the laptop’s budget aspirations.

Besides plenty of screen real estate, you also get plenty of ports including one USB-A 3.2 port, one USB Type C 3.2 port, a USB 2.0 port, HDMI, a combo audio jack and Micro SD card reader.

Pros:

  • large, bright screen
  • stylish, modern design
  • HDMI port and microSD card slot

Cons:

  • older gen AMD processor
  • older USB 2.0 port

Acer’s new laptop, the Aspire 3 A317 gives you a very big LCD screen and updated components. It’s a good budget laptop that’s worth checking out if you’re on a tight budget.

But it’s as if the slim-bezel bandwagon passed by Acer’s latest affordable laptop. It’s three-quarters of an inch thick! But since this is a 17-inch model, portability isn’t a concern.

Physically, you’re getting a whole lot of laptop with a 17.3inch LCD screen and a 1600×900 pixel resolution. Even though IPS has become a virtual standard across laptop categories, here you get a TN panel with a characteristically distinct lack of contrast and brightness. Not to mention poor viewing angles.

Acer did the right thing by passing the limited funds onto where it matters, functionality instead frills. For not a lot of money you get an Intel Core i3-1115G4 CPU, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB SSD.

The keyboard has plenty of throw with a pretty soft action and only a little bit of bounce. It’s also generously proportioned with a full number pad. The touchpad isn’t as large as you’d expect given the ample room.

For connectivity, Acer provides AC Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2 and gigabit ethernet. You also get HDMI, two USB 2.0 ports and a single USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A socket.

Pros:

  • a big laptop for the money
  • plenty of RAM
  • decent storage space
  • plenty of room on the keyboard

Cons:

  • screen quality is disappointing
  • the big bezels date the laptop
  • no USB or card reader

Best 17-inch Laptop under 500 Dollars Buying Guide

Even though you won’t be able to find the best gaming laptop among 17-inch laptops under $500, you’re still getting a laptop powerful enough for daily tasks. But there has to be more to this class of laptop than just a large display.

The underlying components must also be robust. With our top six choices fresh on your mind, you’re probably wondering exactly how we came up with those particular 17-inch laptops. What should you look for when deciding on the best 17-inch laptop under 500 dollars? We’ll explain.

CPU

One of the important things to remember is that the quality of your daily tasks depends on the performance of the processor. A CPU is called the brains of a computer for good reason. It’s the single piece of hardware tasked with job of regulating all the functions of your laptop, including hardware and software.

While Intel processors might rule the roost when it comes PC sales, AMD Ryzen APUs are worth considering as the laptops supported by them are thin and lightweight.

Not quite as powerful as the Core i5 and much less powerful than the Core i7 or Core i9. The laptops in this segment are overwhelming powered by Intel’s Core i3 CPUs or an AMD equivalent. Unless the CPU is on older model like the Core i5 in the Lenovo IdeaPad 330-17.

Fortunately, the processor is not the most important component when it comes to the overall performance of your laptop. An Intel Core i3 has plenty of processing speed for daily activities like browsing the Web, checking emails and social accounts.

RAM

Since you’re likely getting a 17-inch laptop for routine multitasking purposes, system memory is the next important component to consider. Think of it this way, the more RAM you have at your disposal, the more windows and tabs you can open.

But don’t think you have to get the 17-inch laptop with the most amount of RAM. 8GB should suffice, unless you’re working with a lot of data.

Storage

Next up, we look at storage capacity. This is where all your most prized possessions are going to be kept on your laptop. Think family photos, tax documents, games and the like. Opt for 17-inch laptops that offers an SSD.

A solid-state drive helps your laptop operate at a high speed compared to one with an MHD (mechanical hard drive). And since an SSD doesn’t have any moving parts like an MHD, there’s less chance of your files getting corrupted due to shocks to the storage unit from your laptop getting bumped or accidentally dropped.

A 128 to 256 storage capacity provides more than enough storage space for most personal use cases. For activities like graphic design, photo and video editing, you can always upgrade the storage drives in these laptops to a 500GB or 1TB SSD.

Graphics Card

Many of the 17-inch laptops in this price range are going to come with integrated graphics. While the latest Intel CPU’s support some of the most powerful integrated GPUs. For heavier graphics workloads, you might want to consider upgrading the 17-inch laptop you get with a more powerful CPU and discrete graphics card.

Screen Resolution

The resolution of a laptop display gives you a good idea of the kind of picture quality you can expect. Normally, we recommend that you go no lower than a 1920×1080 pixel resolution, which is considered Full HD. Most laptops offer this resolution standard.

However, with the exception of the Asus VivoBook 17. The most common laptop resolution you’ll find for a 17-inch laptop at this price is HD+ which gives you 1600 vertical pixels x 900 horizontal pixels. Let’s just say, images won’t look as sharp as Full HD.

Size and Weight

A 17-inch laptop is one of the largest you can buy. They’re big, bulky and heavy (they can weigh up to 5 pounds). They’re not the sort of laptop you want on commutes or to move around unless you absolutely have to. That’s why they make great DTRs (desktop replacement laptops).

But a big 17-inch laptop gives you lots of screen real estate. And they’re less prone to overheating since there’s more room for components than the standard 15-inch laptops. More expensive 17-inch laptops can house more robust components. And a laptop with a large screen provides a massively immersive experience.

Ports

A great laptop has plenty of USB ports. Make sure the one you choose has all the ones you need to connect your favorite peripherals like an external monitor, mouse or a port for charging your phone.

Battery Life

As you may have noticed, we didn’t go into any detail about the battery life of any of these laptops. That’s because a 17-inch laptop isn’t known for its long battery life and will likely spend most of its days sitting in one area of your home or office, plugged into a power outlet.

But if you really want to know how long a 17-inch laptop that goes for less than 500 dollars will run, on average all the laptops on the list have about a 5-hour run time. While not a full 8-hour work day like we recommend for most laptops, 5 hours isn’t bad considering what you’re spending.
