This is the Razer Blade 15 Base Model.  It’s a bargain compared to the Advanced Model.  Here’s why it should be on your list of laptops for 3D modeling and rendering.

BUILD:  For one, like the Dell G3 15 3579 above, many of the components from the pricier model found their way to the base edition like the beautiful CNC aluminum unibody frame.  It’s a bit chunky compared to the advanced model, but the minimalist design is appropriate for professional use.

DISPLAY:  The 15.6-inch 1080p panel has a 144Hz refresh rate, which is an upgrade from the standard 60Hz version.  While it’s sharp and vivid, 275 nits of brightness means colors don’t reach their full potential.

SPECS:  But the performance makes up for it:  This unit comes with an Intel Hexa-Core i7-1075H CPU, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Max-Q graphics; it’s a powerful feature set capable of running demanding 3D modeling applications.

Best Laptop for 3D Modeling and Rendering Buyer’s Guide

You’re not going to take the same approach as the other guy when it comes to selecting a laptop for 3D modeling and rendering.  You need to know that the laptop model you choose can perform the tasks you do every day.  Here are some key general factors you should focus on to get you going in the right direction.

CPU

As a 3D artist, you might be tempted to blow off this particular piece of hardware focusing instead on the strength of the GPU. 

But you’d be wrong.

When it comes to the execution of design software, especially for tasks like rendering.  No other component works as hard as the processor.  That’s why you want to select a device that offers a multiple core CPU.  Each core is like having another CPU working for you so that many functions can work simultaneously. High-level production software like SolidWorks and Inventor will work well with a Core i5, Core i7 or Core i9 processor.

GRAPHICS CARD

The tools used for 3D modeling are graphically intense.  To get the most out of them requires a good GPU to take pressure off the CPU and RAM.  NVIDIA graphics cards are heavy hitters when it comes to 3D modeling and rendering.  At this time we highly regard the RTX series for more casual rendering.  But for the professional level work, you can’t go wrong with NVIDIA’s Quadro cards.

RAM

For performing modal and structural FEAs, assembling multi-part models and rendering at max resolution, you need enough memory so you spend more time working and waste less time with hang ups.

In most cases, you’ll do well with at least 32GB RAM for things like poly-mesh, complex rendering, ray tracing and other interactive activities.  If you’re just beginning with 3D modeling and basic types of graphic design, 16GB will be okay.

STORAGE

Here, you’re looking for an SSD (solid-state drive).  Look for the ones that are NVMe M.2 as they offer greater overall system performance than SATA.  For storing your creations, we recommend either going with a laptop that offers dual storage (one that offers a small capacity SSD for speed and a larger capacity MHD (mechanical hard drive).  Or you can go with an external hard drive.

SCREEN QUALTITY

By this we mean a display with a high refresh rate (which is different from response time), think 144Hz or better.  This will help process frames faster.  But if the hardware on the laptop you’re keen on is great in every respect except screen quality, don’t despair.  You can always plug your laptop up to a better monitor as long as you have the right port to do so.

ACER

This is one of the largest manufacturers in the world and their laptops are extremely popular among budget users.  Acer continues to offer one of the best overall selections around, with mainstream and gaming options catering to every budget.  You get Chromebooks that are available from just $150 as well as affordable 2 in 1s.  But they also produce high-end gaming laptops like the Predator series and premium notebooks.  You get what you pay for, and Acer laptops are usually the best value for the money.  Their most popular line is the E series and Aspire notebooks like the amazing Aspire 7.  Support for their notebooks leaves plenty to be desired, though.

LENOVO

Thanks to some innovative new features and a wide selection of laptops, Lenovo is one of the best laptop brands.  Their most popular line is the ThinkPad.  And while they don’t offer many Chromebooks, their line of 2 in 1s – like the Yoga and Flex series – is TOTALLY worth checking out.  Prices are reflective of their premium laptop brand status.  But their offerings are ideal for all types of users.  Most recognized for business class laptops that offer extreme performance and a super flexible design, this brand has all but perfected graphics, touchpads, keyboard, display and audio quality.  Their Legion series gaming notebooks competes against the Asus ROG and Acer Predator series.

ASUS

Can you use a gaming laptop for 3D modeling?

Why not?

Gaming notebooks offer excellent features that are advantageous for a task as hardware heavy as 3D modeling and rendering.  But that doesn’t mean that any gaming laptop will be up for the challenge.

AI-assisted rendering and viewport rendering, for example, require plenty of power, as well as OpenGL and DirectX combability.  We recommend machines that will make upgrades easy so you can add more robust hardware in the future.

What’s the difference between NVIDIA GeForce and NVIDIA Quadro?
