Even with its staid design, the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 represents the best detachable 2-in-1 Windows tablets money can buy.

Build:  The compact, sleek design is made of magnesium and alloy which feels high quality.  A built-in rear kickstand has been the subject of copycats since the laptop’s debut.  Fully adjustable, it reclines 165-degrees, including nearly flat for sketching or note-taking.

Display:  It has a 12.3-inch screen with 2736 x 1824 resolution.  The bezels surrounding it, are becoming noticeably thick as almost every laptop in this segment has a razor thin design.

Specs:  Options include a 10th generation Intel Core i5-1035G4 CPU, 8GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD.  Performance is comparable to laptops like the Dell XPS 13.  The machine feels responsive and can run most any task without delay.

Keyboard:  The adjustable keyboard easily attaches to the bottom magnetically.  The typing experience is comfortable with good travel and backlighting.  The touchpad tracks smoothly.

Ports:  One major step into the future is the inclusion of the USB Type-C port which is next to the USB 3.1 Type-A port.  You also get Wifi 6 with Bluetooth 5.0.  If you use peripherals a lot, the lack of ports might be an issue.

Battery Life:  Depending on how power hungry you are, you should average around 8-hours of battery life using programs like Word and Pandora.  The Surface pro 7 has a quick resume and quick charge features.

Pros:

  • snappy Intel Ice Lake CPU
  • robust battery life
  • USB Type-C port

Cons:

  • the Type Cover is still sold separately
  • not enough ports

When it comes to delivering high-performance in a lightweight package, the HP Spectre x360 13t is one of our favorites.

Build:  As a realtor you’ll love its svelte chassis, rounded edges and copper design.  It’s easily one of the most beautiful laptops out there.  And “Hewlett-Packard” emblazoned in copper against the shiny black lid whispers luxury

Display:  Matching hinges help the lid swing back 360-degrees revealing a 13-inch Gorilla Glass touchscreen for durability with a 2560 x 1440 resolution that’s gorgeous to look at.  Images are bright and detailed with high color accuracy.

Specs:  Under the hood is an older but efficient and powerful Intel Quad-Core i7-8550U CPU, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB PCIe NVMe solid-state drive (SSD) providing enough power for work and entertainment.  The only bad thing is the system tends to heat up under heavy stress.

Keyboard:  The backlit, island-style keys have a shallow amount of travel.  Pleasantly, it doesn’t feel all-together mushy or uncomfortable to use.  The touchpad is incredibly spacious with a smooth feel.  And it’s able to recognize Widows 10 gestures remarkably well.  Included is an HD Active Stylus Pen and Bang & Olufsen speakers which sound amazing.

Ports:  Connectivity options include a USB Type-C port, Thunderbolt support, an SD card reader, with 802.11b/g/n Wifi and Bluetooth 4.2.

Battery Life:  You can expect a full 8-hours of power away from an outlet to get things done.

Pros:

  • great keyboard and touchpad
  • beautiful QHD display
  • 8-hour battery life

Cons:

  • keyboard feel is shallow
  • the bottom of the laptop can get hot

3.     Huawei MateBook X Pro (Signature Edition)

The sophomore efforts of the Huawei MateBook X Pro now delivers more bang for your buck.

Build:  It has a deep bench of specs and a premium, smooth metallic finish that feels and looks as luxurious as more established Ultrabook brands.

Display:  Made of Gorilla Glass to prevent scratches, the 13.9-inch IPS touchscreen is bright and sharp with a 3K (3000 x 2000) resolution.  The bezels surrounding it verge on microscopic making no room for the webcam.  Huawei cleverly hid it in a pop-up key in the middle of the keyboard:  it automatically blocks the webcam for safety when not in use.  But using the camera produces the same unflattering ‘up-the-nose result’ as the Dell XPS line used to.

Specs:  Performance is stacked.  Our review unit comes with the potent Intel Quad-Core i7-8550U Intel CPU, 8GB of RAM, mega 512GB SSD and discrete NVIDIA MX150 card.  Doing graphical work using Photoshop and Lightroom is no issue.  You’ll even be able to do some gaming at lower settings.

Keyboard:  Above the keyboard is a power button that doubles as a fingerprint reader.  Below is a full-size backlit keyboard that’s also spill-resistant.  Despite the thin profile, key travel is deep and punchy.  The massive glass trackpad supports Windows 10 gestures and Precision drivers admirably.

Ports:  Port support includes two USB-C ports (one of which is Thunderbolt 3), a USB-A port, HDMI and old school VGA.  But there’s no SD card slot.

Battery Life:  Battery life is fantastic with an all-day-long 8-hour runtime.

Pros:

  • sensible design
  • stunning edge-to-edge touchscreen
  • superb battery life

Cons:

  • flawed, yet clever webcam placement

4.     Asus ZenBook 13

ASUS ZenBook 13 Ultra-Slim Laptop, 13.3” Full HD, 8th Gen Intel i5-8250U Processor, 8GB RAM, 256GB M.2 SSD, Backlit Kbd, Fingerprint Reader, Windows 10, Grey, UX330UA-AH55
  • 13.3 inch anti-glare FHD 1920 x 1080 Display, wide view 170 degrees with Windows 10 Pre-installed. Display: IPS technology
  • Latest 8th Gen Intel i5-8250U 1.6 GHz Processor (6M Cache, Turbo up to 3.4GHz), Fast storage and memory featuring 256GB SATA 3 M.2 SSD with 8GB LPDDR3 RAM
  • Extensive connectivity with Micro HDMI
  • Sleek and light weight 2.6 pounds aluminum body for comfortable portability. Battery Up to 12 hours web browsing
  • Built-in fingerprint reader with one-touch login via Windows Hello feature

If you want a 13-inch Ultrabook and only need the power of an Intel Core i5 processor at a relatively affordable price.  The latest version of the Asus ZenBook UX330UA will serve you well.

Build:  The all-aluminum chassis feels premium and featherweight which will make carrying it with you from house tour to house tour a breeze.

Display:  Focused upgrades include Full HD non-touch screen that delivers crisp and bright images with a decent amount of color.  You also get speakers that produce crisp and clear sounds.

Specs:  Along with a zippy 8th Gen Intel Quad-Core i5-8250U CPU.  The hardware combination includes 8GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD.  Plus, the unexpected addition of a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce MX150 graphics card.

Keyboard:  You’ll stagger with astonishment to discover how the thin profile doesn’t compromise the keyboard deck.  The backlit keys deliver good feedback.  There’s a fingerprint reader cleverly integrates into the glass touchpad.  Using the touchpad, however, is a curious cocktail of super slippery, stiff and spongy.

Ports:  But you’re future-proofed with a useful port selection that includes one USB Type-C port, two USB 3.0 ports, micro HDMI, SD Card Reader, headphone jack and 802.11 Wifi for connectivity.

Battery Life:  The 57-watt hour battery is a carry-over the previous generation.  But due to more powerful hardware and components.  Battery life is decreased somewhat from 12 hours to 8, which is still all-day performance.

Pros:

  • light aluminum build
  • Coffee Lake CPU
  • dedicated graphics
  • backlit keys

Cons:

  • slight dip in battery life
  • anemic graphics performance
  • weird touchpad

5.     Dell XPS 15

Dell XPS9560-5000SLV-PUS 15.6" Ultra Thin and Light Laptop with 4K Touch Display, 7th Gen Core i5 ( up to 3.5 GHz), 8GB, 256GB SSD, Nvidia Gaming GTX 1050, Aluminum Chassis
  • 7th Generation Intel Core i5-7300HQ Quad Core Processor (6M cache, up to 3.5 GHz)
  • 8GB DDR4-2400MHz up to 32GB (additional memory sold separately)
  • 256GB PCIe Solid State Drive, No Optical Drive
  • 15.6-inch 4K Ultra HD (3840 x 2160) InfinityEdge touch display
  • Windows 10 Home 64bit English

If you’re looking for a 2-in-1 convertible with more screen real estate than either the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 or HP Spectre 13t.  The Dell XPS line is considered one of the best-selling 2-in-1 laptops in the industry and the XPS 15 is no exception.

Build:  The aluminum chassis sporting a slim, industrial design is a carry-over from previous models.  Opening the soft-touch black carbon-fiber exterior reveals the familiar power button doubling as a fingerprint reader.

Display:  But the thin bezels of the 15.6-inch InfinitiEdge touch display results in an ill-placed webcam (a design flaw that extends across this generation of the XPS range).  Colors on the 3840 x 2160 res display are deeply rich with sharp detail.  Apart from the ‘chin-cam’, another carry-over is the bottom mounted speakers which has the same anemic sound as before.

Specs:  This model of the XPS 13 sports the older Kaby Lake Intel Quad-Core i5-7300HQ CPU, 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD and Nvidia’s GTX 1060 graphics card into the slim system.

Keyboard:  Keyboard feel is shallow but snappy.  Responsive too is the touchpad which is big enough for pinch-and-zoom functions.

Specs:  Get work done with two USB 3.0 ports, one Thunderbolt 3 port, an SD card reader, HDMI 2.0, headset jack, Noble lock slot, battery status indicator and 802.11ac for Wifi connectivity.

Battery Life:  Battery life is a serviceable 5-hours but certainly nothing to write home about.

Pros:

  • good battery life
  • strong performance
  • bright, vibrant screen
  • satisfying keyboard

Cons:

  • poor audio
  • tragically mounted webcam

6.     Asus Chromebook C202SA

Sale

But perhaps for the work you do in real estate, you don’t even require the power of a full-fledged Windows laptop.  Then a Chromebook like the Asus Chromebook C202SA might just be the laptop you’re looking for.

Build:  One of the most intriguing factors of this Chromebook is the fact that the rugged chassis can withstand drops of up to 3.9 feet.  And as thick as the chassis is the whole device only weighs about 2.7-pounds.

Display:  You can bend the lid back 180-degrees to reveal an 11.6-inch display.  It has a 1366 x 768 HD resolution display with antiglare coating to minimize reflection.

Specs:  For performance, you get a Intel Dual-Core Intel Celeron N3060 CPU, 4GB of RAM, 16GB of storage and integrated Intel HD Graphics 400.  Fairly standard stuff for a Chromebook.  But it’ll help you get work done without much hassle.

Keyboard:  Keyboard feel is Chromebook adequate.  The blue lettering on the keys is a unique touch.  But it makes it hard to see what you’re pressing.

Specs:  Port selection is pretty good with two USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI port, audio jack, SD card reader and a Kensington lock slot.  For connectivity you get the fast 802.11ac Wifi standard.

Battery Life:  This is where the Chromebook really sines.  It has impressive 12-hour runtime to keep you working for a full day and then some.

Pros:

Cons:

  • bad viewing angles
  • blue lettering on the keys could be a miss for some gamers

Best Laptop for Realtors Buying Guide

There’s a lot of tools you need to be successful in this profession.  A laptop with the specs to handle it all should be at the top of the list.  We’ve screened out the best laptop for realtors with the idea that this is a device that should last you for quite some time.  Here’s the definitive list of important specs to keep in mind in your quest for the best laptop along with every detail you need to make an informed choice.

PORTABILITY

In this line of work, a portable device is king.  Much of the day is spent traveling to meetings and hopping from one listing to another.  Why not get a laptop that can keep up?  The weight of the best laptop for realtors will make those commutes easier – it’ll slip easily into your bag or briefcase and won’t leave you feeling like you’ve been carrying around a sack of potatoes all day.  Laptops with a screen size less than 15-inches will be your best choice; 5 pounds or less is just what you’re looking for.

NOTE: Prioritize notebooks with a metal chassis or a full aluminum body.

SCREEN SIZE

On that front, a laptop with a 13- to 14-inch screen size will be easier to carry with you.  And you’ll still have even enough display space to present your work to your clients, especially If you’re always on the go.  Anything 15-inches or bigger could become un-wieldy to manage with everything else you’ve got going on.

DISPLAY RESOLUTION

The laptop you’re considering needs to have a display with good resolution.  You’re going to be staring at this thing a lot.  And you might even use it to show clients potential listings.  Images on a laptop that offers Full HD will look sharper.  So, we recommend 1920 x 1080 (Full High Definition)

Most new laptops come with this resolution standard within most price brackets.  You’ll be able to fit more on it at the same time compared to a display that only offers a 1366 x 768 HD resolution so you don’t have to scroll all over the screen to find information.  But a few of the laptops on our list have an even better screen resolution like the Microsoft Surfance Pro 7 and HP Spectre x360 13t

NOTE: A laptop with a screen that offers anti-glare coating is also ideal.

BATTERY LIFE

You’re busy.  As such one of the most crucial components that should be at the top of your list is battery life. You might be able to find a place for a quick charge as you go from listing to listing.  But wouldn’t it be great if your laptop could stay charged throughout the workday?  This way all your attention can be focused on clients.

Even if you’re one of those real estate agents that likes to carry a charger with you, where will you plug it in out in the field?  The best laptop for realtors will have enough battery power to help you accomplish your daily tasks before needing a re-charge.  Then once you’re at the office you can plug in your laptop into any available outlet.  You need a laptop that will last at least 5 hours after a charge, like the Dell XPS 15 (8 is ideal).

STORAGE SPACE

SSDs (solid state drives) are faster, noise free and don’t overheat like MHDs (mechanical hard drives).  And they’ll help you stick with the go lightweight or go home theme that’s needed in a laptop for real estate as they will be significantly lighter than laptops with MHDs.  Capacity wise, 256GB should be sufficient for the work you do.  But if you also use your laptop for your personal things, we recommend 512GB to 1TB of storage like the roomy HP Spectre x360 13t.

RAM

An abundant amount of RAM helps with a laptop’s overall performance.  More RAM will allow you to open more windows and tabs without compromising speed.  If you mostly use your laptop for work, 8GB of system memory is perfect.  Anything less and you’ll suffer from serious performance issues.  But if you’re a power user that does video/image editing, you won’t hate yourself for picking up a laptop that offers 16GB of RAM like the HP Spectre x360 13t.

CPU

A laptop that offers a Core i3 CPU or equivalent could work or be completely useless to you.  Either way, we have a hard time confidently recommending it for the tasks of real estate.  The best laptop for realtors should have at the very least a Core i5 processor.  If your work involves even more powerful tasks, then you should opt for a laptop that offers a Core i7 or even a Core i9 CPU.

Best Laptop for Realtors Brands

Microsoft

While offering a solid lineup of laptops and tablets, Microsoft improves its selection by adding the budget-friendly Surface Go.  The Surface Book 2 has one of the best battery endurance times also helping to earn this brand one of the top spots on our list.  They take a best of both worlds approach to deliver formidable laptops like the Surface line.  They don’t offer Chromebooks.  But you can choose from many 2 in 1 laptops.  Not all the company’s offerings are amazing, however.  But as Microsoft continues to establish itself as competitive brand, we can’t wait to see what they come up with next.

HP

One of the oldest electronics brands, HP has very strong reviews, stellar designs, impressive innovations, top-notch value and selection.  All of which has helped it go head to head with the best laptop brands in the world.  The latest laptops take design cues from their contemporaries to raise standards even higher.  These notebooks are fast, powerful, and supported by a very competent customer service.  Innovations include an AMOLED version of the Spectre x360, which delivers a brighter and more vibrant display than the standard version.

Huawei

A one-hit wonder?  Maybe.  Huawei is not a name that’s as well-known as others.  But they show fast growth in the global laptop industry.  These laptops offer ultra-speed and performance.  The MateBook X Pro, for example, delivers performance and value with a good design.  In addition, the company boasts a smart design and stylish finish.  Unfortunately, the selection is limited.  And they’re marred by a frustrating tech support team.

Asus

The design of these laptops is always impressive, and you get a wide selection of products to choose from.  The most popular line is the VivoBook, and you can easily find Chromebooks and 2 in 1s here.  Innovations include:  a ScreenPad and ErgoLyft hinge.  If nothing else, what earns Asus the #1 spot on many top 10 laptop lists is the fantastic all-around capabilities of their laptops.  From the thin and light ZenBooks, to affordable Chromebooks and powerful gaming machines like the ROG Zephyrus S, this brand earns the top spot on our list too!

Dell

This is one of the most consistently forward-thinking laptop brands!  Dell has some of the slimmest notebooks you could possibly want.  The most popular line is Inspiron.  But the XPS line is one of the best laptops to buy and gets the notoriety of doing everything surprisingly well with the latest screen resolutions, connections, premium materials, all topped-off with a solid battery life.  The company’s innovation in Ultrabooks yields a wonderful army of ultraportable laptops with powerful specs.  You can even find 2 in 1s and Chromebooks under this moniker with loads of style and hardware.  The after sale and technical support is worthy of so much praise.

FAQ

Can I just use a Chromebook for real estate?

If you’re just starting your real estate career, a Chromebook could be the right choice for you.  Just remember that un-like a traditional laptop, Chromebooks offer limited functionality (that’s why they’re cheaper).  A Chromebook is primarily designed for working with online applications, and to get the most out of a Chromebook it needs constant connection to the Internet.  And there may not be Chromebook versions of all the real estate software you need to use.

Do I Even Need a Laptop for Real Estate Work?

You don’t have to, obviously.  The real estate profession has been around way before laptops and real estate agents were able to get along without them.  But from showing potential clients properties, to setting up meetings, to devising follow-up strategies and keeping in touch, having your very own laptop you can whip out and work on when the mood strikes could prove invaluable to your success.

Wrapping Up

Satisfying the needs of real estate requires a high-speed CPU, a decent amount of storage and excellent screen quality.  And since the work you do requires a lot of travel to survey homes and areas daily, you’re going to want a system with enough battery power to keep up, and preferably one that’s lightweight and easy to tote. Our favorite is the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 because you can easily use it as tablet.  The HP Spectre x360 13t packs a lot of power into a svelte design.  And the Huawei Matebook Pro X is superbly lightweight with plenty of power.
