What makes the Dell Inspiron 15 5000 5570  a top contender for best laptop for streaming movies? The sum of all its part.

BUILD:  Okay, so maybe the plastic chassis is a bland, chunky block.  But the build quality is solid.  And at 4.9-pounds, it’s slimmer than competitors like the Acer Aspire E 15.

DISPLAY:  The 15.6-inch touchscreen is surrounded by a thick bezel.  However, you get a Full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution, but it falls short.  The picture quality is blurry and lacks depth.  That’s because it only covers 67% of the sRGB color gamut. And its dim with only 175 nits of brightness compared to our recommendation of 250 for watching movies.

SPECS:  But inside is an 8th generation Intel Quad-Core i5-8250U CPU, 16GB DDRR4 SDRAM, a generous 512GB M.2 SSD plus a 1TB MHD (mechanical hard drive) for storing your movies and integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620 – Fantastic components for streaming movies.

KEYBOARD:  The backlighting isn’t great, and the keys feel cheap and loose contributing to a shallow feel.  Fortunately, you won’t be using this laptop for extended typing sessions. Although the touchpad is bouncy, it’s also spacious and responsive to multitouch gestures.

PORTS:  Ports include one USB Type-A 3.1 Gen 1 port, two USB 3.0 ports, HMDI output, an Ethernet and headphone jack, an SD card reader, 802.11ac WiFi and Bluetooth.

BATTERY LIFE:  The 5-our runtime also falls short of the average. But it’s still on the high-end of what we recommend for streaming movies.

Pros:

  • solid performance
  • 1080p touchscreen
  • responsive touchpad
  • good battery life for watching videos

Cons:

  • poor display and keyboard

2. Acer Aspire E15

  • 15.6 inches Full HD (1920 x 1080) widescreen LED lit Display
  • 6GB Dual Channel Memory, 1TB HDD and 8x DVD
  • Up to 13.5 Hours of battery life
  • Windows 10 Home. Operating System Architecture 64-bit

Hey, speaking of the Acer Aspire E 15, what makes it a real winner is that it’s one of the few laptops that offers a DVD drive so you can also watch movies on physical media.

BUILD:  Typical of budget laptops, the smooth black deck is made of chunky plastic.  It’s big and heavy with cross-etching to give it a brushed metal appearance.  At 5-pounds, it’s heavier than most 14-inch notebooks.

DISPLAY:  But the huge selling point is the crisp 15.6-inch Full HD widescreen LED-lit display.  You get good detail. But with about only 62% reproduction of the sRGB color gamut, it’s not very colorful or very bright with a maximum brightness of 227 nits.

SPECS:  This base example gets good performance from an 8th gen Intel Dual-Core i3-8130U CPU, 6GB RAM, a roomy 1TB MHD (mechanical hard drive) to download the entire season of your favorite series.  And an integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620.

KEYBOARD:  The keyboard is pleasantly springy and well-spaced keys but there’s not much travel.  The touchpad is large, however, and quickly responds to Windows 10 gestures.

PORTS: You’re getting a wide variety of ports including an 8X DVD double-layer RW Drive, one USB 3.1 Type-C port, two USB 3.0 port, one USB 2.0 port, HDMI port with HDCP support, VGA input, an SD card reader, headphone jack, 802.11ac Wifi and Bluetooth 4.1

BATTERY LIFE:  The 6-cell Li-ion battery returns a good battery runtime of 8-hours which is strong for a budget laptop.

Pros:

  • solid performance
  • good battery life
  • lots of ports

Cons:

  • bulky design

3. Lenovo Flex 4

For streaming movies, why not a convertible 2-in-1 laptop like the Lenovo Flex 4?  Now the Flex is a budget version of the Yoga line with stripped out features and dialed down specs.  But it’s still a formidable laptop for streaming movies.

BUILD:  The company produces some of the most light-weight laptops: at about 4-pounds the Flex 4 is relatively easy to sit anywhere and watch your favorite flick comfortably with a 360-degree hinge.  Un-fortunately, the screen has enough wobble to make casual touchscreen use a no-go.

DISPLAY:  If you favor screen real estate, this 15.6-inch version comes with a Full HD touchscreen that tracks finger movements decently.  But the visual quality is un-fortunately on the side of dim.

SPECS:  The system is blessed with an honest to goodness Intel Core i7-6500U CPU and 16GB RAM.  A fast 256GB SSD makes the system feel speedier than the 1TB MHD that drags down the performance of some versions. And you get an integrated Intel HD Graphics 520 card.

KEYBOARD:  The keyboard deck is a call-back to the glory days of the IBM ThinkPad.  The keys have very good travel with an audible snap that’s satisfying.  And the touchpad is good quality, too.

PORTS:  The Flex 4 gets our praise for its amazing port selection consisting of two USB 3.0 ports, an always-on USB 2.0 port, a full-size HDMI, and a full-size Ethernet port and an SD card slot.

BATTERY LIFE:  The 3-cell, 52.5 Whr battery has an excellent runtime of 8-hours.

Pros:

  • good battery life
  • awesome keyboard
  • strong battery life

Cons:

  • pen not included
  • slightly dim screen

4. Acer Aspire 5

Acer Aspire 5 Slim Laptop, 15.6 inches Full HD IPS Display, AMD Ryzen 3 3200U, Vega 3 Graphics, 4GB DDR4, 128GB SSD, Backlit Keyboard, Windows 10 in S Mode, A515-43-R19L, Silver
  • AMD Ryzen 3 3200U Dual Core Processor (Up to 3.5GHz); 4GB DDR4 Memory; 128GB PCIe NVMe SSD
  • 15.6 inches full HD (1920 x 1080) widescreen LED backlit IPS display; AMD Radeon Vega 3 Mobile Graphics
  • 1 USB 3.1 Gen 1 port, 2 USB 2.0 ports & 1 HDMI port with HDCP support
  • 802.11ac Wi-Fi; Backlit Keyboard; Up to 7.5 hours battery life
  • Windows 10 in S mode. Maximum power supply wattage: 65 Watts

If you don’t want a 2-in-1 laptop a slim notebook like the Acer Aspire 5 Slim is not only an impossibly good deal.  But it makes a conveniently portable laptop for streaming movies.

BUILD:  It’s lighter (3.8-pounds), thinner, and slimmer (at 0.7-inches) than many of its rivals.  The design is mostly plastic with a thin sheet of aluminum classing things up and providing acceptable durability for the price.

DISPLAY:  The narrow bezel surrounding the 15.6-inch display gives you a larger view of the Full HD IPS screen. It delivers pleasing color with a matte finish to help tame distracting reflections when you’re watching movies. But it only serves up a maximum brightness of 200 nits.

SPECS:  The base model A515-43-R19L configuration comes with an AMD Dual-Core Ryzen 3 3200U APU and only 4GB DDR4 RAM.  The 128GB capacity PCIe NVMe SSD is also paltry. But you get integrated AMD Radeon Vega 3 mobile graphics.

KEYBOARD:  The backlit keyboard is a luxury not often found at this price point.  The keys have a decent enough travel for comfortable typing with a Windows Precision touchpad.

PORTS:  The slim design loses things like an SD card reader, a VGA display output port and DVD drive.  Around the sides you’ll find a USB Type-C port, one USB 3.1 Gen 1 port, two USB 2.0 ports, HDMI with HDCP support, RJ-45 Ethernet, 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.

BATTERY LIFE:  The over 8-hour battery life is twice our recommendation for streaming movies which is excellent.

Pros:

  • lightweight
  • good performance
  • good battery life
  • excellent port assortment

Cons:

  • no SD card slot or Thunderbolt port

5. Acer Predator Helios 300

Acer Predator Helios 300 Gaming Laptop PC, 15.6" Full HD 144Hz 3ms IPS Display, Intel i7-9750H, GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6GB, 16GB DDR4, 256GB NVMe SSD, Backlit Keyboard, PH315-52-78VL
  • 9th Generation Intel Core i7 9750H 6 Core Processor (Up to 4.5GHz) with Windows 10 Home 64 Bit
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti Graphics with 6GB of dedicated GDDR6 VRAM
  • 15.6 inches Full HD (1920 x 1080) Widescreen LED backlit IPS Display (144Hz Refresh Rate, 3ms Overdrive Response Time, 300nit Brightness and 72 percentage NTSC)
  • 16GB DDR4 2666MHz Memory, 256GB PCIe NVMe SSD (2 x PCIe M.2 Slots; 1 Slot Open for Easy Upgrades) and 1 Available Hard Drive Bay
  • Backlit Keyboard; LAN: Killer Ethernet E2500 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet LAN; Wireless: Killer DoubleShot Pro Wireless AC 1550 802. 11ac; 4th Gen All Metal AeroBlade 3D Fan

For just streaming movies or your favorite series, the Acer Predator Helios 300 is a bit much. But if you’d also like to take advantage of playing some awesome titles in your spare time, this version is worth a look.

BUILD: We love that there’s an empty M.2 SSD slot and a 2.5-inch drive bay so you can easily add more in the future.

DISPLAY:  The 15.6-inch Full HD display has a 144Hz  3ms response time with IPS to help make your movies and games run smoother than competitors with only 60Hz displays. The panel is bright at 276 nits and more colorful than the competition.

SPECS:  The performance is impressive with an Intel Hexa-Core i7-9750H CPU, 16GB DDR4 RAM and a 256GB NVMe SSD. One of this laptop’s coolest features is that at a push of a button, you can overclock the dedicated NVIDIA GTX 1660Ti graphics chip, which has 6GB vRAM.

KEYBOARD:  The ice blue backlighting looks awesome against the see-through key caps. And the keyboard is comfortable for long typing sessions and gaming. The Precision touchpad is smooth, responsive and accurate.

PORTS:  You get one USB 3.1 Type C gen 2 port, but unfortunately, it’s not Thunderbolt 3. You get three more USB 3.1 Gen 1 port, HDMI 2.0 port with HDCP support, minDisplay port 1.4, Ethernet, Wifi 802.11a and Bluetooth 5.

BATTERY LIFE: With such high performance, battery life suffers only able to deliver about 4-hours before you need to plug the laptop in.

Pros:

  • excellent 1080p display
  • plenty of storage
  • great keyboard and touchpad

Cons:

  • the screen has noticeable backlight bleeding in dark scenes

BEST LAPTOP FOR STREAMING MOVIES BUYING GUIDE

Watching movies is not a resource hungry activity requiring high-end specifications. A basic laptop can be up for the challenge.  You don’t even need that great of a processor; an Intel Core i3 will do just fine for streaming.

While all that’s true there are a few features that will impact your entertainment experience the most.  Here, we’ll elaborate on the features that’ll have the greatest impact on your viewing experience.

DISPLAY SIZE AND RESOLUTION

Bar-none, this is the most important feature when it comes to choosing the best laptop for streaming movies.

As far as the display size, we recommend 15-inches. This will give you enough screen real estate to get absorbed in your movies while not compromising portability. If, however, your laptop will remain in one general area in your home, go for a laptop with 17-inch screen; treat yourself.

After size, the next most important thing is screen resolution. This has the most effect on viewing quality. It’s all about pixel density – the number of pixels per inch of the screen.

The best laptops for streaming videos have a resolution of 1080p.  But if you’re taking entertainment duties away from the big screen offered by a standard television and there’s room in your budget. You could opt for a QHD or 4K screen; again, treat yo self.

PANEL TECHNOLOGY

Another facet of the screen worth considering is the panel technology.  IPS panels are popular for a reason.  Unlike TN panels, colors don’t look as muted and washed out when viewed from different angles.

IPS panels are a popular choice for using your laptop for entertainment because they ensure you’ll be able to see what your watching clearly without distorted colors no matter the angle of the display.

SCREEN BRIGHTNESS

A display’s maximum brightness levels affects the quality of what’s on the screen.  Laptop display brightness levels are measured in nits – look for laptops with screen brightness levels of at least 250 nits for best performance. Typically, gaming laptops like the Acer Predator Helios 300 offer better display dynamics than budget systems.

PORTABILITY

A laptop that’s easy to carry around single-handedly will make your viewing experience all the more enjoyable. You should be able to place it comfortably on your laptop.

We judge the portability of a laptop based on size and weight.  And size is primarily determined by a laptop’s screen size.  Practically any laptop with a 15-inch screen will be relatively easy to manage; they can weigh between 4 to 5-pounds.

But if maximum screen real estate is what matters most to you, opt for laptops with a 17-inch screen. These behemoths are between 6 to 8-pounds.

GRAPHICS

The power of the graphics card doesn’t seem to have much bearing on the performance of what you’re watching on screen. So, this is an area where you get to save a bit of money.

The GPU that comes with even an Intel Core i3 CPU is strong enough to support video playback nicely.  But for the smoothest experience you want a laptop supported by dedicated graphics.

RAM

You’re going to want at least 4GB of memory to watch movies on your laptop.  But stream those films in all their cinematic glory requires at least 8GB of RAM.

STORAGE

When it comes to the storage on a laptop you’ll primarily be using for streaming movies and your favorite series, we recommend a hybrid solution.

What’s a hybrid solution?

Good question. A hybrid storage solution is one that leverages the large storage capacity of a mechanical hard drive (MHD). And the lightening speed of a solid-state drive (SSD).

SSDs are much faster, safer and more reliable than MHDs. But if you’d like to download and store lots of movies on your local drive MHDs are more cost-effective as you’ll get more disk space for less money on average.

But the rise of streaming networks like Netflix, Amazon Prim and Hulu takes away the need for a laptop with a massive storage space. However, you may still choose to store a few of your favorite movies on your laptop.  For that we recommend at least 512GB of space.

BATTERY ENDURANCE

Prioritize laptops with a battery runtime of at least 4-5 hours for streaming movies. This is a crucial feature if you find yourself in a spot where you can’t easily connect your laptop to a power outlet.  Who wants to run out of juice when you’re just getting to the good part?

To do this successfully, you really want to look for laptops with batteries that can last at least 8-hours. Why? Because this time will shrink significantly (by half) when streaming videos. This will stand the best chance so that you can get through the last 45 minutes of Transformers: Age of Extinction.

PORTS

Connectivity options are also an important consideration for watching videos on your laptop.  After all you’ll need a good WiFi adapter to connect to the internet for these streaming services. In this department, just remember that the best laptop for streaming movies will support wired and wireless connectivity.

BEST LAPTOP FOR STREAMING MOVIES BRANDS

DELL

This is one of the most consistently forward-thinking laptop brands!  Dell has some of the slimmest notebooks you could possibly want.  The most popular line is Inspiron.  But the XPS line is one of the best laptops to buy and gets the notoriety of doing everything surprisingly well with the latest screen resolutions, connections, premium materials, all topped-off with a solid battery life.  The company’s innovation in Ultrabooks yields a wonderful cadre of ultraportable laptops with powerful specs.  You can even find 2 in 1s and Chromebooks in this brand with loads of style and hardware.  The after sale and technical support is worthy of so much praise.

ACER

This is one of the largest manufacturers in the world and their laptops are extremely popular among budget users.  Acer continues to offer one of the best overall selections around, with mainstream and gaming options catering to every budget.  You get Chromebooks that are available from just $150 as well as 2 in 1s.  But they also produce high-end gaming laptops like the Predator series and premium notebooks.  You get what you pay for, and Acer laptops are usually the best value for the money.  Their most popular line is the E series and Aspire notebooks like the amazing Aspire 7.  Support for their notebooks leaves plenty to be desired, though.

LENOVO

Thanks to some innovative new features and a wide selection of laptops, Lenovo is one of the best laptop brands.  Their most popular line is the ThinkPad.  And while they don’t offer many Chromebooks, their line of 2 in 1s – like the Yoga and Flex series – is TOTALLY worth checking out.  Prices are reflective of their premium laptop brand status.  But their offerings are ideal for all types of users.  Most recognized for business class laptops that offer extreme performance and a super flexible design, this brand has all but perfected graphics, touchpads, keyboard, display and audio quality.  Their Legion series gaming notebooks competes against the Asus ROG and Acer Predator series.

FAQ

Are Chromebooks good for watching movies?

They can be.  Chromebooks have less storage space than the average laptop which relegates you to streaming platforms.  If this isn’t an inconvenience for you, then a Chromebook is an excellent choice for streaming movies, especially since you can find many that offer an FHD resolution.

Do the same features for streaming movies apply to watching movies off-line?

Yes.  With reasonably good quality CPU, screen resolution, GPU, storage capacity and RAM, watching movies off-line doesn’t take up more resources than streaming movies.

How much does the CPU matter when it comes to streaming movies?

It matters because processor speed can significantly affect your ability to stream the movie you want to watch.  But in today’s market most laptops come with CPUs that are speedy enough to watch movies easily, so it’s not a component you need to focus a lot of your attention on; the graphics card, RAM and storage are more important.

To Sum Up

These are the 5 most epic laptops for streaming movies. And now you know the most important features to focus on to make your viewing experience phenomenal. And you can even use the same device for work! For our money, our top pick is the Dell Inspiron 15 5000 5570. Although it’s made of plastic, it’s well built. The Acer Aspire E 15 weighs a bit more. But the display provides really good detail for watching Transformers. And even though the Lenovo Flex 5 is a budget version of the Yoga, it’s a great value for streaming movies on a train, in a plane or at a waiting room.
