Despite its gaming DNA, the Razer Blade 15 has the goods for statistical data analysis.  It even sheds a few frills to get you great performance in a premium chassis.

BUILD:  Speaking of chassis, it’s a thin and compact unibody made of CNC aluminum that feels durable.  But there is some notable flex in the middle of the lid as you open the laptop.

DISPLAY:  Inside you’ll find a Full HD 15.6-inch display.  The matte panel is vibrant with sharp detail and crisp graphics all with a 60Hz refresh rate.

SPECS:  This is the entry-level Blade 15 which features an Intel Core i7-8750H CPU, 16GB RAM, 128GB SSD and a 1TB MHD (one of the first Bade 15s to offer dual storage).  And it’s also equipped with NVIDIA’s 1060 Max-Q with 6GB of vRAM.

KEYBOARD:  The Chroma keyboard is magnificent to behold.  But the chiclet-style keys have a shallow feel.  The large 5 x 3-inch touchpad recognizes Windows 10 gestures with clicky left and right mouse buttons.

The Gigabyte Aero isn’t necessarily a gaming laptop (that honor goes to the Aorus line).  And it’s not really a mobile workstation.  It’s a sensible choice if you want a beast of a performer with a gorgeous display for working with large sets of data.

BUILD:  For one thing, the chassis has a premium even professional look that’s un-like most gaming rigs.  Instead, the body is a conservative CNC-machined aluminum slab with an illuminated Aero logo on the lid.  The lid and keyboard deck betray a small amount flex.

DISPLAY:  Due to the skinny bezels, the webcam is in the same location that won the Dell XPS so much infamy.  But you get a super colorful 15-inch 4K Ultra HD (3840 x 2160) resolution LCD display with ISP and anti-glare coating.  However, maximum brightness is low.

SPECS:  The “SA” means this is the entry-level model outfitted with an Intel Coffee Lake Hexa-Core i7-9750 CPU, 16GB of RAM, a 512GB M.2 PCIe SSD, and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660ti graphics with 6GB vRAM delivering spectacular performance.

KEYBOARD:  A bit shallow and mushy, the per-key RGB backlit programmable keyboard has a soft and snappy touch.  The touchpad glides and taps smoothly.  But you need the right amount of pressure to register clicks.

PORTS:  You get two USB Type-C ports (one Thunderbolt 3), three USB Gen1 Type-A ports, HDMI 2.0, an SD card reader, Ethernet, a combo audio jack and Wi-Fi.

BATTERY LIFE:  The very large 94Whr battery has a runtime of about 3-hours.

Data Science has one of the most demanding requirements of any computing activity.  Data Scientists use several applications and tools to analyze datasets, databases and more.

Without knowing exactly the type, amount of data and the type of analysis you’ll be conducting.  It’s difficult to generalize about the kind of laptop you’ll need.

If your laptop will be your main computer, you can also tap into the additional resource-based support of Amazon Web Services to increase performance.  The add-ons will augment the overall performance of your system for better results.

Be advised that many data science-related activities like simulation and training deep learning/machine learning algorithms may require additional support other than what’s available in your laptop’s hardware configuration like an external GPU, RAM or more processing power.

On the flip side, you won’t need a very powerful machine if you can connect to a remote server.  Still, you’ll need a powerful, multi-core processor, a fast SSD for storage and sizeable memory, especially if you DON’T have access to a remote server.  Here’s a break-down of all the specs you’ll need for the best laptops for data science.

RAM

Memory is likely the most important hardware for data science because it’s the biggest bottleneck with large data sets.  Multitasking when it comes to data science involves activities like using different tools, working on one or more coding languages and using a browser for web research. 

Additionally, more RAM also helps set up a pseudo-distributed cluster on a single machine to some extent (but it’ll still be very limited).  Also, if you’re using R, having more bandwidth is always a good idea; prioritize laptops with at least 16GB of RAM.  But for something distributed like map reduce, 8GB of memory is just fine. 

HARD DRIVE

Storing multiple, large data sets also requires plenty of storage space.  An SSD (solid-state drive) is going to make an enormous difference to the tasks you need to do.  It’ll be up to 3x faster than a MHD (mechanical hard drive).  Look for a laptop that offers an NVMe SSD with a minimum capacity of 512GB of space.

CPU

The third most important place to focus your money is the processing power of the laptop.

You might need SQL management resources like Workbench and prototyping tools like Anaconda for simplifying work.  Using programs like Tableau for Data Visualization and connecting the laptop to a data server requires exceedingly high amounts of processing power. 

If you work with data sets and codes, the performance of the processor is the priority.  A laptop with a Core i7 or Core i9 processor and multi-threaded performance capability works well for data science tasks like compiling, simulation, dataset analysis, and model training. 

Although they are all fast these days, to future proof your investment.  Get the fastest CPU you can afford since this hardware is often not upgradable in a laptop.

OPERATING SYSTEM

The operating system is an essential factor.  The MacOS works the best if you’re connected to a remote server.  But a Windows 10 powered machine backed by Linux (Ubuntu) will do the same.  Ultimately, the final decision comes down to the industry you’re working in or the company you’re working for as much as your personal preference. 

Why?

Because it’s all about compatibility.  Every now and then you’ll have to run a few programs like Tableau, Anaconda, Terminal and SQL Workbench, Sublime Text etc. on your laptop.  If pressed, we’d have to say go for a laptop that supports Linux operating systems seamlessly like a Lenovo. 

SIZE AND WEIGHT

The laptop you choose should be nimble enough for you to carry around so you can present your analyses and data science projects to colleagues, clients and your boss.  On the flip side, while it should be lightweight enough to manage.  It shouldn’t be so featherweight that it lacks required hardware specs to get things done.

GRAPHICS

If you work with neural networks, indulge in parallel computing or deep learning/machine learning using NVIDIA CUDA architecture for optimizations of machine learning algorithms.  An amazing dedicated graphics card will be very helpful.

The strength of the GPU should be your priority – You want a laptop with a graphics card that has as many CUDA cores/Shaders as you can afford.  It will help you compile models, simulate models and run them.

We can’t stress enough that a good GPU is a must have for intensive data science tasks like deep learning model training and model simulation.  You’ll need a dedicated graphics card with at least 2GB of vRAM.

DISPLAY

Your workflow needs to be as smooth as possible so you can concentrate on what you’re doing and not irritating details like a screen that makes things hard to see.  You need a decent display.  Specifically, a laptop that offers a high resolution.  But there’s no need to go all out here; a bright, 1080p display with IPS technology will go a long way in helping you work for hours.

KEYBOARD

Follow this up with an ergonomic keyboard and you’re in business.  Smaller things like an excellent touchpad are important when you find yourself on a long flight or commute and you want to use the time to prototype something on your laptop.  Features like a backlit keyboard will help you keep working even in poorly lit environments.

PORTS

Connectivity options are important too.  A decent WiFi card also helps significantly decrease downtime.  Make sure the laptop you choose has all the important ports you need.  A Thunderbolt (USB Type C) port is important for things like transferring data to and from external drives at lightning-fast speeds.  Not to worry since many laptops come with this port.

This is one of the most consistently forward-thinking laptop brands!  Dell has some of the slimmest notebooks you could possibly want.  The most popular line is Inspiron.  But the XPS line is one of the best laptops to buy and gets the notoriety of doing everything surprisingly well with the latest screen resolutions, connections, premium materials, all topped-off with a solid battery life.  The company’s innovation in Ultrabooks yields a wonderful army of ultraportable laptops with powerful specs.  You can even find 2 in 1s and Chromebooks under this moniker with loads of style and hardware.  The after sale and technical support is worthy of so much praise. 

LAMBDA

Unless you work in a field that involves math or science, you’ve likely never heard of this company before.  They’ve only been around since 2012.  Their mission:  To accelerate human progress with computation.  Lambda builds computers for deep learning or machine learning which is a theory of algorithms designed to help software applications do tasks based on data rather than programming.  Their customers include Apple, Intel, Microsoft, LinkedIn, Tencent, Raytheon, and Los Almos National Labs.  The only laptop they manufacture is the TensorBook.  The top-end model is configured to eliminate bottlenecks in the CPU, storage or memory.  We’ll wait to see what they have in store for the future.

LENOVO

Thanks to some innovative new features and a wide selection of laptops, Lenovo is one of the best laptop brands.  Their most popular line is the ThinkPad.  And while they don’t offer any Chromebooks, their line of 2 in 1s – like the Yoga and Flex series – is TOTALLY worth checking out.  Prices are reflective of their premium laptop brand status.  But their offerings are ideal for all types of users.  Most recognized for business class laptops that offer extreme performance and a super flexible design, this brand has all but perfected graphics, touchpads, keyboard, display and audio quality.  Their Legion series gaming notebooks competes against the Asus ROG and Acer Predator series.

RAZER

The brand is well-known for delivering the best high-end gaming laptops — More than 95% of the notebooks get treated to high-end graphics cards as well as the latest, powerful hardware.  If you’re on a budget MSI is not for you.  Laptops here are usually very expensive with $1000 being the median price range.  But if you get what you pay for, then we have to say that the quality is unbelievable.  Like Dell, they’re consistently innovative with offerings like the eye-tracking sensorunique gaming keyboards, and amazing designs to attract gamers.  They even offer laptops made exclusively for power users!  But it’s not all powerful graphics cards and CPUs, options are limited:  The company struggles to breakout of its familiar designs.  And the tech support is laughable; you don’t even get 24/7 support.    

GIGABYTE

Primarily, Gigabyte Technology is a manufacturer of motherboards.  They also design other PC components used by Alienware, Falcon Northwest, CybertonPC, and Origin PC.  While the company and its sister brand, Aorus, produce some solid laptops with vibrant displays, thin bezels, innovative keyboards and helpful gaming software.  None of their offerings really stands out, even with the Aorus X9 being one of the first laptops to offer a Coffee Lake Core i9 processor.  But as far as innovation goes the joint companies have shown their willingness to buck the trend to show what a gaming laptop could be by cramming impressive performance and battery life into fun designs.  Between the two there’s an abundance of choices for users.
