It’s not flashy, but Lenovo’s Legion 5 is among some of the best gaming laptops on the market. It teams the latest AMD processor with a dedicated NVIDIA graphics card to deliver spectacular performance for the $1,200 price range.

When it comes to design language, the Legion 5 is the polar opposite of the latest gaming laptops, however. At more than an inch thick, the chassis is a throwback to the bulky gaming laptops of old.

It’s built around an expansive 16-inch Full HD (1920×1080) display with a 16:10 aspect ratio, which sits between the more popular 15.6-inch and enormous 17.3-inch panels with 16:9 ratios. This unique aspect ratio gives the display a square shape which you’ll appreciate when surfing the Web or scrolling through documents.

The Legion 5 features an AMD Ryzen 7 5800H APU, 16GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD, and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050TI graphics.

For a dash of visual appeal, the four-zone RGB keyboard is customizable. The keyboard is roomy and comfortable to use with keys that offer a satisfying and quiet typing experience. Centered below the keyboard is a large touchpad. The matte finish allows for smooth gliding and accurate gesture recording.

There’s a useful and thoughtfully arranged collection of ports clearly labeled. Most are located on the back edge including, HDMI video output, three USB Type-A ports, USB-C (with power delivery and DisplayPort support but no Thunderbolt capability), an Ethernet jack and power connector. On the left edge is another USB-C port and a headphone/mic combo jack. And on the right edge is a USB-A port.

With a few battery saving tweaks, the Lenovo Legion 5 has a battery runtime of a little over seven and a half hours which is fantastic for a gaming laptop.

Pros:

  • class-leading multithreaded CPU performance
  • good gaming muscle with GeForce RTX 3050TI
  • roomy, crisp and fast 16-inch display

Cons:

  • drab design for a gaming laptop
  • bulky, hefty chassis
  • equally hefty power brick

2. Acer Nitro 5 17

Refreshed for 2021, the Acer Nitro 5 17 is an excellent entry-level gaming laptop that packs a punch for big-screen, high-refresh-rate gaming.

Although the plastic build is easier to accept in lower configurations, it’s not all that inspiring here. And while this is a drawback for this setup, the unit is smooth and sturdy with red accents on the back for a little flair.

The 17.3-inch display features a Full HD resolution and a blistering fast 360Hz refresh rate. Screen quality is decent and the 1080p resolution is sharp enough with well saturated colors. But at 300 nits of brightness, it’s not especially bright given the screen size.

Despite an entry-level design, the hardware on tap ensures brisk 1080p gaming for less than the premium competition. You get an Intel Core i7-11800H CPU, 16GB of RAM, a 1TB NVMe SSD and the latest NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050TI graphics card that’s great for projects like video editing.

Even with a bit of a mushy feel at the bottom of the press, the keys have a nice bounce with plenty of travel. The touchpad, however, is less remarkable – the way it’s positioned gets in the way of the WASD keys when you’re playing.

Rounding out the build is a moderate selection of ports. On the left are two USB 3.1 Type-A ports and an Ethernet jack. The right offers another USB-A 3.1 port, a USB-C port and HDMI video output.

The Nitro 5 shows good stamina with the ability to last nearly seven hours from a full charge. It’s about the best you can expect from a 17-inch gaming laptop. Even 15-inch gaming equivalents like the Lenovo Legion 5 find it challenging to offer more.

Pros:

  • strong 1080p gaming performance
  • plenty of useful ports
  • good battery life for a 17-inch gaming rig

Cons:

  • relatively dull display
  • uninspiring design
  • build quality could be better for the price

The LG Gram 17 is another extremely big laptop with an incredibly bright display. It’s a lean good-looking machine that now with its Tiger Lake upgrade is also one of the best large screen laptops you can buy.

It used to be hard to recommend big screen laptops to mainstream users because they were heavy and bulky, not to mention priced just out of reach for many. Although this LG Gram 17 is a new laptop, it maintains what it always had going for it – a lightweight magnesium alloy chassis.

If you just want a big screen laptop and don’t care much about how powerful the GPU is, the Gram 17 also maintains the same brilliant QHD panel. It has a 2560×1600 pixel resolution, which sits between Full HD and 4K.

Fresh for 2021, it sports an 11th generation Intel Core i7 CPU, 8GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD and integrated Intel graphics. It’s a hardware offering that makes it the best option if you’re not a gamer or content creator.

You also get a redesigned keyboard and touchpad. The large screen easily accommodates a full-sized keyboard with a dedicated numeric keypad featuring improved travel distance that provides a satisfying typing experience.

You’ll find plenty of input and output options along the edge. These include, two USB 3.2 Type-A ports, a headphone jack, and two USB-C ports supporting Thunderbolt 4 speeds. LG also includes a microSD card reader and a full-size HDMI port.

Thanks to Intel’s latest silicon, the LG Gram 17 benefits from an extraordinarily long battery life of nearly twenty hours from just two cells.

Pros:

  • amazingly light for a 17-inch laptop
  • new comfortable keyboard
  • brilliant QHD display

Cons:

  • audio quality could be better
  • glary screen when used outdoors

4. Dell G3 15 3500

Dell Gaming G3 15 3500 - 15.6 Inch FHD, Intel Core i7-10750H 10th Gen, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 512GB SSD, Nvidia Geforce GTX 1650 Ti 4GB GDDR6, Windows 10 Home Eclipse Black
  • 1920 x 1080 FHD 300 nits IPS Anti-Glare
  • 802.11ac 1x1 WiFi
  • 16GB DDR4-2933MHz, 2x8G
  • Heighten your immersive gaming experience with optional 4-zone RGB backlit keyboard and Nahimic Sound Center with dual speakers

Last update on 2022-06-10 at 21:08 / Affiliate links / Images from Amazon Product Advertising API

Dell’s revamped budget gamer is a straightforward Full HD gaming laptop with powerful performance. Even with a design that’s mostly unremarkable, it’s an overall competent machine at the right price.

The G3 15 is neither flashy in its aesthetics nor fancy in design. It’s just a simple, reasonably compact 15-inch system with a textured plastic finish. It blends un-offensively into any environment with a mostly solid construction.

The G3 15 elevates its game with a 120Hz 15.6-inch FHD display. But it can’t quite push AAA titles to 60 FPS (frames per second). The performance, however, is sufficient for entry to midrange gaming.

Good performance comes from an Intel Core i7-10750H CPU, 16GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD that’s big enough for a gaming library. And an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650Ti graphics card with 4GB of vRAM.

The rest of the build is similarly basic with a serviceable keyboard and touchpad. While the keys have a bit of feedback, the action is mushy. The textured touchpad is simple without the smooth glass finish of more premium gaming laptops.

The physical and wireless connectivity options round out the build with a USB 3.1 port, a USB Type-C port (with DisplayPort support), an HDMI port and an Ethernet jack on the left which is somewhat of a rarity on entry-level gaming laptops. On the right are two more USB ports, along with a headphone jack and SD card slot.

Battery life is respectable if unremarkable at around five hours, and that’s with making a bunch of energy saving conservations. Gaming performance will return a much lower runtime.

Pros:

  • 120Hz display
  • full complement of ports
  • thin and light for a gaming laptop

Cons:

  • not quite capable of 60fps at high settings in AAA gaming
  • flimsy compared to the G5
  • display color could be better

Last update on 2022-06-10 at 21:08 / Affiliate links / Images from Amazon Product Advertising API

TUF stands for The Ultimate Force and with the all-new Ampere and Tiger Lake-H silicon merging in an able midrange gamer. The latest Asus TUF F15 churns out competitive frame rates without costing a fortune.

The TUF brand prioritizes performance and value over flashy design. Even still, the TUF F15 delivers a premium look and feel. Made of a combination of smooth plastic and metal, it has a durable MIL-STD-810H construction like the LG Gram 17.

The 15.6-inch 144Hz FHD display checks all the right boxes for competitive gaming with an IPS panel that has a glare-killing matte surface. Although brightness levels are only average, the contrast ratio makes for a colorful, engaging picture.

It has an Intel Quad-Core i7-11800H CPU which might seem like an odd choice in a segment full of six-core chips. But Tiger Lake’s microarchitecture delivers better performance than Comet Lake. With that you get 16GB of RAM, a 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050Ti graphics for good gaming performance that makes the Asus TUF F15 a respectable pick.

And it’s not lacking for practicality with a comfortable island-style keyboard that delivers ample travel and satisfying feedback. The backlit WASD cluster shows nicely. And the buttonless touchpad is amply sized with a smooth surface and communicative clicking action.

Port selections is above average with a Thunderbolt 4/USB-C port on the left. You also get three USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports, a headset and Ethernet jacks, and a full-size HDMI 2.0b video output (good for 4K on an external monitor at 60Hz).

It has a lengthy-for-its-class battery life of just over eight hours with all the battery save modes on. Actually gaming with the laptop returns half that time.

Pros:

  • solid 1080p gaming performance
  • competitive battery life
  • quiet cooling fans

Cons:

  • no webcam or biometric features
  • display could tilt back further

If you’re after a big-screen convertible, the HP Envy x360 15 is one of the best budget laptops. It sits between the company’s premium Spectre x360 15 and the less expensive Pavilion x360 15.

In tablet mode, it proves unwieldy to manage. But no one has been able to produce a 15-inch 2-in-1 laptop that isn’t. For a supersized convertible, however, the Envy x360 15 is a handsome choice.

You get the brighter 15.6-inch Full HD IPS touchscreen in this configuration with a brightness level of 400-nits. The bezels around the Gorilla Glass screen are slim. HP claims an 89% screen-to-body ratio.

Targeting creative users, the Intel Core i7-1165G7 CPU serves up great performance. This model also comes with 16GB of RAM, a 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD and integrated Intel Iris Xe graphics.

The backlit keyboard is pleasant to use with a snappy typing feel. Also on the keyboard deck is a large, buttonless touchpad that glides and taps easily albeit with a slightly stiff click.

The convertible has three USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps) ports, a Type-A port on either side (the one on the left is for charging peripherals). An HDMI video output and audio and a Type-C port on the left.

After a few battery conserving tweaks, the HP Envy x360 15 can get an almost thirteen hour runtime to get you through a full eight hour workday no problem.

Pros:

  • classy design
  • speedy Intel Core i7 CPU
  • colorful screen

Cons:

  • pen not included
  • too heavy to hold in tablet mode

This 15-inch version of the Microsoft Surface 4 is an excellent choice for general-purpose computing on a big screen. It offers one of the most refined computing experiences of any Windows laptop.

All other Surfaces are futuristic 2-in-1 detachable machines. The Surface Laptop 4, on-the-other-hand is just a straight-up clamshell laptop with excellent build quality and a snazzy design. It’s an excellent example of a classic laptop.

One of the most noteworthy aspects of the Surface brand is the 3:2 screen orientation. It’s a signature Surface feature that adds space for viewing vertical documents at the expense of horizontal space for watching movies.

The new AMD Ryzen 7 4980U APU brings significant performance improvements to the 15-inch Microsoft Surface 4. With that comes 8GB of RAM and a roomy 512GB SSD with integrated AMD Radeon graphics.

The keyboard and touchpad are far more comfortable than most detachable laptops offer. The typing experience is far above average, even when compared to other premium Windows laptops. Using the glass touchpad is extremely satisfying.

As far as input and output ports are concerned, you get a headphone jack and rectangular USB Type-A port. The Surface 4 also comes with a USB-C port that can be used to charge the laptop. And it supports video output using an adapter. But it doesn’t support Thunderbolt 4 interface. Instead of more USB ports, you get the proprietary Microsoft port.

So, how’s the battery life? You can expect almost fourteen hours from the Microsoft Surface 4 with all the power saving options turned on.

Pros:

  • lightweight and stylish
  • bright, razor-sharp screen
  • comfortable touchpad

Cons:

  • no version comes with dedicated graphics
  • only two USB ports

The Acer Swift X is a light and peppy laptop that gives you two-thirds the power of a basic workstation laptop in two thirds the weight at relatively affordable price. The secret sauce? An AMD Ryzen based APU and the latest GeForce RTX graphics.

At 3.31 pounds, it’s five ounces too heavy to be an ultraportable. Instead, it’s a 14-inch laptop that delivers one of the best price-to-performance ratios you can find. Clad in aluminum, there’s a slight amount of flex around the screen and keyboard deck.

The bezels surrounding the 14-inch Full HD screen are attractively thin. The non-touchscreen is sufficiently bright with good contrast. Viewing angles are relatively wide. But even though the colors are reasonably well-saturated, they don’t exactly pop.

Powering the laptop is an AMD Ryzen 7 5800U APU, 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. Despite having a fairly game-worthy NVIDIA RTX 3050Ti GPU, it’s not a gaming notebook. But it’s the best budget laptop on the list at an affordable price.

The backlit keyboard has a shallow, wooden typing feel that, while not uncomfortable isn’t all that snappy or responsive. But the buttonless touchpad feels slick and glides and taps smoothly (the bottom half clicks easily while the upper half is stiff and bulky).

On the left edge is one Type-A and one Type-C port (both are USB 3.2), along with an HDMI video output and power connector. You’ll find a second USB-A port, an audio jack and a security-cable locking notch on the right.

When you take all the battery saving precautions, the Acer Swift X will give you a runtime of just over fifteen hours to get you through your workday and then some.

Pros:

  • potent Ryzen 7 APU
  • powerful NVIDIA RTX 3050Ti graphics
  • attractive 1080p screen

Cons:

  • no SD or microSD card slot
  • finicky keyboard

9. MSI GP65 Leopard

MSI gaming notebooks range from budget devices to high-dollar masterpieces of engineering. The GP65 Leopard is a mid-tier offering with an amazing display. While it makes some sacrifices, the focus is on hardware where it belongs.

One of the cost-cutting efforts is in the decision to use a plastic chassis. But it’s tempered by a brushed aluminum lid. Although the laptop mostly looks the same from the previous generation, the bottom panel has been redesigned for improved ventilation.

One of the highlights of the GP65 Leopard is the 15.6-inch 120Hz display which has a 3ms response time. The backlight is bright and extremely color accurate.

The spec sheet for this laptop should be the gold-standard for mid-tier gaming. The GP65 Leopard is equipped with an Intel Core i7-10750H CPU, 16GB of RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD and NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 1660Ti graphics to check every box expected of a gaming laptop.

MSI’s partnership with SteelSeries has yielded the company some of the best keyboards on gaming laptops. The keys on the GP65 Leopard offer good travel with soft, yet firm feedback. And the RGB backlight allows for a high level of customization. The recessed touchpad is smooth offering a good glide.

The port selection is wonderfully varied. Highlights include a dedicated microphone and headphone jack, HDMI 2.0a and miniDp 1.4 and four USB ports, two of which are USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports. And there’s even an SD card reader.

Unsurprisingly, battery life leaves a lot to be desired. Even with all the battery saving techniques you can muster, you should only reasonably expect about a four hour runtime.

Pros:

  • great typing experience
  • per-key RGB keyboard
  • bright display with good color accuracy

Cons:

  • plastic chassis feels cheap for the price
  • touchpad buttons have a hollow feel
  • lid flexes easily

10. Asus ROG Strix G15

ASUS ROG Strix G Gaming Laptop, 15.6” 120Hz IPS Type Full HD, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti, Intel Core i5-9300H, 8GB DDR4, 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD, RGB KB, Windows 10, GL531GU-WB53
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6GB GDDR6 (Base: 1455 MHz, Boost: 1590 MHz; TDP: 80W)
  • Intel Core i5-9300H Quad-core Processor
  • 120Hz 15.6” 1920x1080 IPS Type Display
  • 8GB DDR4 2666MHz RAM | 512GB PCIe SSD | Windows 10 Home | Gigabit Wave 2 Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac 2x2)
  • ROG Intelligent Cooling thermal system with dual 12V fans, anti-dust technology, and adjustable fan modes

Last update on 2022-06-10 at 21:08 / Affiliate links / Images from Amazon Product Advertising API

The Asus ROG Strix G15 gives you strong performance and a punchy keyboard packed into a sleek design. It’s a fine choice if you’re looking for a solid laptop for less than $1,200.

When you open the lid, the lightbar surrounding the lip of the deck flares with RGB lighting. The faux-aluminum design is done up in polarizing pink accents.

While the bezels surrounding the 15.6-inch display are incredibly thin, there’s not a webcam in sight. The 120Hz IPS display fails to pop. And at only 251 nits, it’s not as bright as other laptops in its category.

Under the hood is an Intel Core i5-9300H CPU, 8GB of RAM and a 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD. Also packed into the Strix G15 is an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660Ti graphics card with 4GB of vRAM. It averages a solid 30 FPS in games like Red Dead Redemption 2 on medium settings at 1080p.

In the interior is a one-zone RGB-lit keyboard as well as pink WASD keys. The touchpad also has a pink trim surrounding the interior. Using the keyboard is a satisfying experience with satisfying feedback. The touchpad is quite soft with two discrete mouse buttons.

In an overtly gamer fashion, a thick cartridge on the back holds a bunch of ports. It includes a power jack, an HDMI port and one USB Type-C port. On the left are three USB Type-A ports and a headphone jack.

Gaming laptops are steadily increasing their battery life numbers. But the Asus ROG Strix G15 lags slightly behind them at just over five hours (even while using the laptop conservatively).

Pros:

  • strong performance and graphics
  • sleek design
  • punchy keyboard

Cons:

Best Laptops under 1200 Dollars Buying Guide

As laptops become more and more powerful, premium laptops have more to offer both gamers, professional content creators on the go and every user in between. If you’re confused about what makes the best laptops under 1200 dollars, there are a few things you want to keep in mind to ensure you end up with the best value and the best bang for your buck.

Screen Size

Many laptops at this price point come with a 14- to 15-inch screen size. 15-inch laptops are the most common because they balance ample screen real estate with portability. If you’re looking for something bigger, there are plenty of 17-inch models to choose from that give you a completely immersive experience for activities like gaming and watching movies.

Resolution

Most laptops at this price come with a high refresh rate, excellent color accuracy, high contrast ratio and a good resolution. Resolution is measured horizontally x vertically. This has to do with the number of pixels making up the display. The more pixels that make up the display, the crisper the image will be. At this price you’ll find many Full HD laptops which means they have a pixel resolution of 1920×1080.

CPU

A key deciding factor for any laptop decision is the processor on offer. A powerful CPU makes your laptop compatible with new generation applications and games. Fortunately, for $1200, you get very powerful chipsets to choose from. You’ll find many laptops with an Intel Core 7 or AMD Ryzen 7 APU to help you comfortably run the latest programs and software with no issues or bottlenecks.

Graphics

The graphics card is another component that can significantly affect the high-end performance of any laptop. For top notch gaming performance in this price category, you want to opt for NVIDIA’s latest RTX graphics. Combined with a powerful processor, it’s tough to beat.

For specialized programs like Adobe Premier Pro, Da Vinci Resolve, Photoshop or architecture and engineering programs like Revit, Solidworks, Lumion and 3DS. You also can’t go wrong with a dedicated graphics card from NVIDIA or AMD.

Many of the laptops on our list come with at least 4GB of dedicated vRAM, which works to take the load off RAM to further improve the performance of your laptop.

But if the work you want to do with your $1,200 laptop isn’t all that graphics heavy. The GPU that comes with Intel’s latest CPUs (Intel Iris Xe Graphics) are some of the most powerful, even capable of lightweight gaming.

RAM

Memory is equally as important as the GPU and CPU for a smooth user experience, especially if you’ll be using your machine for multitasking. The more RAM you have, the more you can do simultaneously.

Don’t settle for anything less 8GB. In those moments when you really need the power, the amount of RAM your laptop has can drastically impact performance. But only up to a point, so don’ think you have to get the laptop that offers the most amount of RAM.

That said, most laptops at this price point come with at least 16GB of RAM, which is more than enough for most activities. This enables you to run several programs at once and switch between Microsoft Word and Excel with a half dozen browsers open without any lag or freezes. 16GB is also good for lag-free AAA gaming.

Storage

How much storage should your 1200-hundred-dollar laptop have? That really depends on how much information you want to store locally.

Another great feature of laptops in this category is that you get devices with higher storage capacities. 256GB is good enough for the average user. But many laptops at this price bracket come with a 512GB capacity SSD. You can even find laptops with up to 1TB of space!

You’ll find most of these laptops packed with an NVMe SSD. This improves the overall speed of the laptop. This technologies aids with even faster boot times as well as faster loading times.

Ports

Be sure the laptop you choose has all the ports you need to connect to your favorite peripherals like an external mouse or monitor.

Battery Life

As a mobile machine, battery life should be a concern unless of course your laptop will spend most of its days tethered to a power outlet.

The great news here is that technology has dramatically improved to the point that while business laptops were practically the only category with long-lasting batteries, now even gaming laptops are turning in some really good runtimes.

You’ll find many Windows laptops with a battery life of more than 10 hours, along with gaming rigs that can deliver up to a 5-hour runtime. Laptops with integrated graphics cards will have an even better battery life than laptops with a dedicated graphics since they don’t have to utilize as much power.
