The Lenovo Chromebook Flex 5 13 is one of the best laptops with a touchscreen, truly a full-featured 2-in-1 worth having. In a market characterized by poky processors and cramped flash storage, it shows how a Chromebook can outpace the most inexpensive systems without inflating price.

The Chromebook Flex 5 13 is a midrange Chromebook that benefits from sharing the same basic, premium stylish design with SKUs within the Flex family costing more. Upgraded features include a robust 360-degree hinge that’s uncommon with Chromebooks.

With a Full HD resolution, the 13.3-inch touchscreen offers reasonably crisp text and vivid colors. But the maximum brightness of 250 nits is quite low. There’s an optional Lenovo digital pen (sold separately) or you can just use your fingers to tap the screen.

It’s a capable 2-in-1 convertible laptop equipped with an Intel Core i3-10110U CPU, 4GB of RAM and a 64GB eMMC storage drive, all of which add up to perfectly adequate performance for a Chromebook.

Made of soft-touch plastic that extends to the keyboard deck, the backlit keys are quite comfortable to use. But the multitouch touchpad is made of Mylar, which makes it less comfortable than the keyboard.

The Chromebook Flex 5 13 offers an impressive number of ports for a Chromebook. On the left edge are USB ports, including USB-C and a USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A port, a headphone jack and a microSD card reader to supplement the cramped 64GB drive. On the right, there’s an additional USB-C port.

It has a good battery life of nearly 12 hours, which should get you through a full day of light work.

Pros:

  • comfortable keyboard
  • microSD card reader
  • long battery life

Cons:

  • dim 250-nit touchscreen
  • uncomfortable touchpad

2. HP Pavilion x360

  • 4GB system memory can smoothly run multiple applications and browser tabs all at once; 128GB solid state drive (SSD) has no moving parts, resulting in faster start-up times and data access, no noise, and reduced heat production and power draw on the battery.
  • Intel Pentium N5000 processor; With Intel UHD Graphics 605 On-processor graphics with shared video memory provide everyday image quality for Internet use, basic photo editing and casual gaming.
  • High-speed wireless LAN built into the screen, so it connects to your network or hotspots on the most common Wi-Fi standards in both laptop and tablet modes. Our next choice for best touch screen laptops is the HP Pavilion x360. It’s a superb 11-inch 2-in-1, with a stunning design, great battery life and good performance. It has all the utility of a standard laptop, with the flexibility and intimate usability of a tablet.

The Pavilion x360 sports an all-plastic chassis with a 360-degree hinge so you can use the machine as either a laptop or tablet. One thing that makes it one of the best budget laptops is that it borrows several design elements from the premium Spectre x360, but scales back the premium features with plastic construction.

The 11.6-inch HD touchscreen is well-suited as both a compact laptop and tablet. It has a low end 1366×768 resolution that’s not uncommon for the laptop’s size or price. The IPS panel supports 720p HD video and is adequate for basic Web browsing and productivity.

It packs less-expensive hardware, including an Intel Pentium N5000 CPU, a 4GB RAM, a 128GB SSD and integrated Intel UHD Graphics 605. That’s powerful enough to get work done or stream a video.

The Pavilion x360 has a full-size keyboard with square tile keys. It feels less cramped than you would expect on an 11-inch system. It has a 3.8×2.2-inch touchpad with a clickable surface and gesture support.

Port support includes HDMI-out, a headset jack, USB 3.0 and a Kensington lock.

While the Pavilion x360 might be built for mobility, it only lasts less than 6-hours from a full charge. This means you’ll need to carry the power cable with you. However, the battery life is on par with other convertibles in this range.

Pros:

  • flexible, convertible design
  • touch and pen support
  • decent audio

Cons:

  • too heavy for tablet use
  • low-resolution display
  • short battery life

The Asus VivoBook Flip 14 oozes style for a budget 2-in-1. And the hardware on offer helps it stand just off the edge of the budget end of the Flip 14 lineup.

The thin, flat aluminum design turns heads in laptop mode. And that thinness makes it fairly natural to use in tablet mode. The most noticeable features are the two 360-degree display hinges – they feel sturdy and hold the display in place.

The 14-inch HD touchscreen (as you can imagine on a budget system) isn’t that bright. And the glossy screen coating can be troublesome in terms of glare and reflections if you use the laptop outdoors or under harsh indoor lighting.

Powering the VivoBook Flip 14 is an Intel Celeron N4020 CPU, 4GB of RAM, a 128GB SSD and an integrated Intel UHD Graphics 600 graphics card. This component pairing helps it deliver enough oomph to power Windows 10 smoothly without a fan.

It also features an impressively thin keyboard deck with rounded corners and straight edges flowing down to a taper. As well as being thin, the keyboard is quiet with keys that provide a pleasing, springy feel and a muffled click sound. The matte surface of the touchpad feels responsive and smooth.

The convertible loses USB Type-A ports, for the smaller, thinner Type-C variety in the form of a lone USB 3.1 Type-C port, along with a micro-USB 2.0 port. You’ll need to make do with a micro-HDMI port instead of a full size one. But there is a full-size SD card slot, along with a headphone jack.

The result of such a low-powered configuration is that you get about a 9-hour battery life, which means you’ll be able to use the VivoBook Flex 14 throughout your entire workday.

Pros:

  • sleek aluminum looks
  • excellent battery life
  • fanless operation

Cons:

  • lid has some flex
  • HD resolution

4. Dell Inspiron 11 3195 2-in-1

Dell Inspiron 11 3195, 2 in 1, 7th Gen AMD A9-9420e W/ Radeon R5 Graphics, 4GB DDR4 2666MHz RAM, 64GB HD, 11.6" HD (1366 X 768) LED-Backlit Touch Display (i3195-A525GRY-PUS)
  • 7th Generation AMD a9-9420e Processor with Radeon R5 Graphics
  • 11 6" Hd (1366 x 768) LED-backlit Touch Display
  • 4GB 4GBx1 DDR4 2666MHz
  • 64GB eMMC storage
  • No Optical Drive

Whether you’re looking for a backup laptop or a training PC for your kids, the Dell Inspiron 11 3195 2-in-1 is a solid choice offering better performance than you might expect at an affordable price.

One intriguing aspect of the Inspiron 11 3195 (especially if you’re purchasing it for your child or even college students) is that it comes in a variety of colors, including Bali blue, tango red, foggy night gray and Alpine white. In place of a detachable keyboard, the 360-degree hinge feels sturdy allowing it to translate into any mode you want.

Even for a budget laptop, the 1366×768 touchscreen is underwhelming with some pixelation and lack of color fidelity. And since it only emits 146 nits of brightness, the Inspiron 11 3195 is better used indoors than outside.

The AMD 9-9420e APU and 4GB of RAM enable a very modest amount of multitasking. You also get a cramped 64GB of eMMC storage.

Considering the price, the keyboard is decent. Although as expected the keys have a shallow feel. But Dell has done well with the layout. The buttonless touchpad offers a firm click to each touch, registering input as well and accurately as one on a model costing three times as much.

You’ll find the Inspiron’s USB 3.0 port, HDMI-out and microSD card reader on the left. Along the right edge are two USB 2.0 ports, a headphone jack and Noble brand security lock slot.

Despite the modest hardware, you shouldn’t expect to stay away from power outlets. The Inspiron 11 3195 only has a battery life of 5 hours, which is far from our 8-hour benchmark.

Pros:

  • great performance for the price
  • great audio
  • multicolor options

Cons:

  • short battery life
  • dim display
  • runs warm on the bottom

Convertible Chromebooks that can be used as tablets are new to the laptop scene. The HP Chromebook x360 14a is a value-priced HP laptop tailored for users that want an inexpensive machine for browsing the Internet, handling email and Google Docs.

Wrapped in a clean metallic silver, the Chromebook x360 14a is fairly standard at 3.3 pounds. But it’s somewhat hefty as a tablet. The two silver hinges have just enough resistance to fold the laptop easily without feeling like you’re about to snap the machine in half.

As is common in this price range, the 14-inch IPS touch panel is limited to a 1366×768 pixel resolution. The result is dull-looking images and video playback, which aren’t helped by a low 220-nits of brightness.

The Chromebook x360 14a comes with an Intel Quad-Core Pentium Silver N5000 CPU, which is a budget processor found in many low-cost laptops. And 4GB of RAM with a 64GB eMMC flash storage, which itself is as close to the bottom of the barrel as it gets in terms of memory and storage without storage capacity being cut in half.

The buttonless touchpad is finicky and slow to respond, ruining the system’s otherwise smooth performance. You’ll want to use the touchscreen more often, which is conversely responsive and easy to use, both in landscape and portrait orientations.

The Chromebook x360 14a doesn’t have the best options for I/O ports. You will, however, find a USB Type-A and Type-C ports on the right side of the laptop. On the left flank is a headphone jack, a microSD card reader and another USB-C port.

If you’re using this Chromebook for work, you should know it’s going to give you just under 7-hours of work before calling it quits. This is especially disappointing, given the low-res screen.

Pros:

  • responsive touchscreen
  • snappy performance
  • good-looking design

Cons:

  • low-res display
  • inconsistent touchpad
  • poor speaker quality

6. Asus Chromebook Flip C433

ASUS Chromebook Flip C433 2 in 1 Laptop, 14" Touchscreen FHD NanoEdge Display, Intel Core m3-8100Y Processor, 8GB RAM, 64GB eMMC Storage, Backlit Keyboard, Silver, Chrome OS, C433TA-AS384T
  • 14 inch Touchscreen Full HD 1920x1080 4-way NanoEdge display featuring ultra-narrow bezels (5mm thin) around each side of the display that allows for a 14-inch screen to fit in the body of a 13-inch laptop footprint
  • The Full HD display has a durable 360 degree hinge that can be used to flip the touchscreen display to tent, stand, and tablet mode
  • Powered by the Intel Core m3-8100Y Processor (up to 3.4 GHz) for super-fast and snappy performance.  If you use a ton of tabs or run lots of apps, this has the power to get it all done with ease
  • 8GB LPDDR3 RAM; 64GB eMMC storage and 2x USB Type-C (Gen 1) and 1x Type-A (Gen 1) ports plus a backlit chiclet keyboard (*USB Transfer speed may vary. Learn more at ASUS website)
  • Chromebook runs on Chrome OS - an operating system by Google that is built for the way we live today. It comes with built-in virus protection, updates automatically*, boots up in seconds and continues to stay fast over time

The concept of the “premium Chromebook” was fully realized when Asus dropped the Chromebook Flip C433 on the market. It demonstrates exactly how a laptop in this segment should be with a dazzling screen, tactile keyboard and a classy design.

The sleek matte-sliver aluminum finish gets a chrome trim that’s reminiscent of the company’s ZenBook ultrabooks. And with an 87% screen-to-body ratio, the Chromebook Flip C433 is one of the most compact 14-inch laptops you’ll ever see.

This updated version is made even better with a larger display that’s robust and bright, even though it’s only in a 14-inch body. The 1080p touchscreen is bright and vivid, covering 93% of the sRGB color gamut, making it more vibrant than its predecessor.

Another upgrade includes stronger performance, coming from an Intel Core m3-8100Y CPU and 64GB eMMC storage. This unit also comes with 8GB of RAM, which takes it above the base model. And it sports an integrated Intel HD Graphics 615 GPU.

The backlit keyboard offers a solid typing experience, with an albeit shallow travel. Individual keys are nicely spaced with tactile feedback. The 4.1×2.4-inch touchpad swiftly responds to swipes and taps as you browse the Web.

With such a super-thin chassis, there isn’t much space for ports. But the Chromebook C433 does offer the essentials, including a USB 3.1 Type-A port, a USB-C port and a headphone jack all along the left side. On the right is a second USB-C port and a microSD card slot.

The third major upgrade includes a longer battery life that tops its predecessor’s already impressive runtime. The Chromebook Flip C433 can last almost 10 hours fully charged to get you through an entire day at work or school and maybe longer.

Pros:

  • sleek, premium design
  • solid performance
  • vivid, 14-inch touchscreen
  • long battery life

Cons:

  • stiff hinges
  • finicky touchpad

7. Acer Chromebook Spin 311

While it may look like your typical 11.6-inch Chromebook, the low-cost and versatile Acer Chromebook Spin 11 is a compact convertible that also makes a good fit for your grade-school child or light-browsing.

It comes decked out in a plain silver plastic chassis with some contrast afforded by matte-black keys and piano-black display bezels. There’s some flex on the lid and bottom panel, but not to the degree of becoming concerning.

The Spin 311 combines a low-res 1366×768 resolution with touch support resulting in a somewhat dim display. Things also look a bit grainy when you sit close to the screen.

Inside, it follows the standard budget Chromebook recipe using an Intel Celeron N4020 CPU and 4GB of RAM, while offering a tight 32GB of local eMMC flash storage. But it’s still a great laptop for everyday use.

Depending on the size of your hands, the keyboard might feel cramped. The keys too are a bit narrow but feel snappy and responsive. It has a buttonless touchpad that will record your mousing gestures accurately, offering the perfect amount of travel with firm feedback.

The Spin 11 scores a point for offering two USB 3.1 Type-A ports and two USB Type-C ports (one of each can be found on either side of the laptop). But it loses that point for lacking HDMI output. To cover the missing connection, the USB-C port supports DisplayPort so you can connect to an external monitor.

Since the quality of the display is the single greatest battery drain on a touchscreen laptop, one with a low-res screen should offer a decent battery life. But the Spin 311 only offers just shy of a 9-hour battery life. While that’s more than our 8-hour benchmark, it’s less than the Spin 311’s segment.

Pros:

  • 2-in-1 versatility
  • responsive keyboard and touchpad
  • both USB Type-A and C ports

Cons:

  • small, low-resolution display
  • meager 32GB of storage
  • brief battery life

With its scratch-resistant glass, reinforced hinges and rugged build, the Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 11e is the tough midrange convertible-hybrid laptop you buy when you want a machine built to withstand the rigors of whatever you can throw at it.

This is an 11-inch system that can pull double duty as a tablet when you fold the screen back 360 degrees. It sports the familiar dark-gray finish that defines the ThinkPad line with rounded corners and a rubber bumper around the lid to help protect the display.

The 11.6-inch touchscreen is protected by scratch-resistant Dragontail Glass, which is similar to Corning’s Gorilla Glass and six times stronger than regular glass. The IPS touchscreen delivers bold, rich colors that look great from any angle and it’s responsive.

Powered by an Intel Celeron Quad-Core N4100 CPU, 4GB of memory and a 128GB SSD, performance is mediocre. It can’t match the performance you get from pricier midrange convertible-hybrid laptops.

The well-spaced chiclet-style keys provide a comfortable typing experience, however. It has an equally comfy touchpad that offers accurate cursor movement and smooth pinch, zoom and swipe gesture control. But you won’t find the signature red Lenovo Trackpoint controller.

On the right side of the chassis, you’ll find an HDMI port and a USB 3.0 port. On the left side is an Ethernet port, a USB port with charging capabilities, a headphone jack and a 4-in-1 SD card slot.

Even with all the power-sipping hardware, the Yoga 11e only lasts 6-hours fully charged. But this is more of a machine you purchase because you want a laptop that can stand up to the bumps and bruises of the road than one you purchase for performance and longevity.

Pros:

  • sturdy build
  • responsive touchscreen
  • wide viewing angles

Cons:

  • okay performance
  • middling battery life
  • low-res screen

9. Acer Chromebook R13

  • 256 GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD internal storage
  • AMD Radeon Graphics, Windows 10 Home in S Mode

The big downside of Chromebooks is that their software options are limited. But the Acer Chromebook R 13 doe a great job of combining an attractive design and long endurance with the ability to run your favorite Android apps.

The stylish aluminum chassis gives the Chromebook R 13 an eye-catching look. And by no means does it give off cheap laptop vibes.

It’s 1080p display rotates the laptop into many modes on a pair of hinges that are tight enough to keep the convertible stable. The Full HD IPS panel shows crisp images but with the same unimpressive color and brightness as the other touchscreen laptops at this price.

This unit sports an Intel Quad-Core MediaTek MT8173C CPU, 4GB of RAM and a 64GB flash drive. It’s not a combination that offers enough speed for smooth multitasking. But it’s good enough for Web browsing and checking emails.

The keyboard offers a lovely typing experience. The keys work so well by offering a generous travel distance and good actuation force. Just as responsive and accurate is the 4.1×2.3-inch buttonless touchpad.

On the left side of the Chromebook is a USB Type-C port (it can be used for charging, and it supports USB 3.1 data transfer), HDMI port, USB 3.0 port and microSD card reader. The headphone jack and lock slot can be found on the right side.

The Chromebook R 13 goes the distance, lasting about 11 hours from a single charge. All in all, it’s a good piece of hardware for the price.

Pros:

  • sleek, premium-looking design
  • comfortable keyboard
  • excellent battery life

Cons:

  • mediocre performance
  • flat audio

As you can see, there are plenty of worthy budget 2-in-1 convertible Chromebooks for users that want a tablet and a laptop in one. The Asus Chromebook Flip CM3 is an excellent 2-in-1 convertible Chrome OS laptop with speedy performance, a reliable touchscreen and even includes a stylus.

The metallic silver of the chassis complements the black of the keyboard and screen bezels well, and it looks quite handsome as both a laptop and a tablet. At just 2.5 pounds, the Chromebook CM3 is considered featherweight in this segment.

You’ll find a 12-inch, 3:2 LCD panel with a 1366×912 resolution. Although it’s a somewhat odd resolution, it offers more vertical room than the standard 1366×768-pixel count found on many Chromebooks in this price range. And it has a rated maximum 220 nits that provides adequate brightness.

On the inside, is an Intel MediaTek 8183 CPU instead of the usual Intel or AMD offerings, which are found in low-cost Chromebooks. It runs about as well as Intel’s Pentium or AMD Athlon CPUs. You also get 4GB of RAM, 32GB eMMc storage and an Arm Mali-G72 MP3 GPU.

A few low points of the Chromebook CM3 include a clumsy touchpad delivering spotty performance at best that can be frustrating to use. You’ll likely want to use the touchscreen or an external mouse for greater precision. The chiclet style keyboard doesn’t suffer the same fate, thankfully. The keys are spaced far enough so they don’t feel cramped with satisfying feedback while typing.

As far as I/O ports, there’s not a lot of them. On the right side, you’ll find a lone USB Type-C port. And on the left, you’ll find a headphone jack, a USB-A port, another USB-C port and a microSD card reader.

Battery life taps out at the 7-hour mark.

Pros:

  • responsive touchscreen
  • two USB-C slots
  • includes stylus
  • lightweight

Cons:

  • glossy screen
  • clumsy touchpad
  • disappointing battery life

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right laptop isn’t easy, especially when you’re on a budget. Touchscreen laptops can be more intuitive to use than traditional laptops. And since many of them are 2-in-1 convertibles, you get additional functionality and versatility. Our top choice is the Lenovo Chromebook Flex 5 13. It comes equipped with the most powerful CPU on the list, a comfortable keyboard and an almost 12-hour runtime. Our next choice is the HP Pavilion x360. Not only does it sport a stunning design, but it’s supported by a 128GB SSD. And our third choice is the Asus VivoBook Flip 14 oozing style with its 14-inch touchscreen and thin keyboard deck.
