Inspiron 3000 vs 5000

Whether you’re looking for an inexpensive laptop you can use for browsing the web. Or you need one powerful enough for design work. Dell’s Inspiron brand has a laptop for every occasion. Inspirons are predominantly Windows laptops divided into three Series: 3000, 5000 and 7000. And as you go up the latter, you tend to see more premium features (along with higher price tags). The number between the “Inspiron” branding and the series number refers to the screen size. The Inspiron family just got a huge refresh with five new models, spanning four display sizes. In what follows, we present the top performers for each screen size in our Inspiron 3000 vs 5000 comparison to find the best values.

In the world of super-cheap systems, the Inspiron 11 3000 (3195) 2-in-1 is one of Dell’s least expensive laptops and an excellent option for kids, light work or ultimate portability.

It’s a handsome, compact machine with portability and impromptu tablet usability as the primary goals. Measuring 1.5×7.75x 0.6-inches, it weighs 2.5 pounds. The material feels appropriate for the asking price. The keyboard has a textured, plasticky finish with unsurprisingly shallow key travel. But the touchpad is surprisingly perfectly fine to use. We say surprisingly because this is an area where many manufacturers choose to cut corners.

The 11.6-inch touchscreen has a 720p resolution, which lacks the definite sharpness of full HD. And the maximum brightness level isn’t that bright. But it’s acceptable enough on a system this inexpensive and for the screen size.

Pros:

  • inexpensive full Windows 10 system
  • compact convertible design

Cons:

  • slow all-around performance
  • visibly warping on screen edges when touching the panel
  • cheap-feeling keyboard
  • brief battery life

The Dell Inspiron 14 3000 (3493) is the perfect laptop when you want a basic machine for surfing the web. It offers 9-hours of battery life, a fast 32GB flash drive and tunable speakers thanks to Waves MaxxAudio Pro software.

Along with a minimalist design that’s made of a finely textured material, the touchpad measuring 4.1×2.5-inches feels rougher than other laptops in its class, like the HP Stream 11 which adds to its overall durability and an overall solid feeling laptop. It comes with a spill-resistant keyboard that feels nice enough to bang out a quick email.

The 13.6×9.6×0.8-inch body is relatively svelte and light weighing 3.5 pounds. To keep costs relatively low, the 14-inch HD, Truelife LED-backlit panel only has a 1366×768 HD resolution.

Pros:

  • long battery life
  • solid lineup of ports and slots
  • portable, compact design

Cons:

  • dim screen
  • shallow keyboard
  • doesn’t support 802.11ac Wi-Fi

Need a bigger-screen laptop between the $300 to $800 range? If you have modest performance demands, you can get the Dell Inspiron 15 3000 with an Intel N4020 CPU, 8GB of RAM a 256GB SSD, and Windows 10 Pro for less than $600.

This is a top-tier rung of the entry-level laptop ladder that’s more than capable of performing your daily computing needs. It boasts all the physical characteristics of a solid, low-cost laptop, along with a solid feature set for lightweight productivity tasks. Situated between the largest Inspiron 17 3000 and the smaller 14 3000, the laptop is robust without being bulky. Measuring 14.3×9.8×0.78-inches, it weighs 3.91 pounds, which is average size midrange laptop sizes.

The display panel measures 15.6-inches diagonally and offers a 1366×768 resolution. Content looks crisp enough from a distance, but you’ll need to increase the text size using the Windows Settings app to make smaller onscreen elements readable. Viewing angles and maximum brightness are perfectly tolerable  for this screen type.

Pros:

  • speakers deliver adequate volume
  • comfortable keyboard
  • dedicated number pad
  • HDMI and Ethernet ports
  • good battery life

Cons:

  • no USB Type-C port
  • low quality HD screen
  • using the touchpad requires patience

When you want a desktop replacement laptop, but you don’t want to pay astronomical prices. The Dell Inspiron 17 3000 (3793) has your name all over it. And one of the features you won’t find on most modern laptops that a DTR affords you is an onboard DVD player for all your physical media.

With a price tag of less than $900 it lacks frills like a backlit keyboard or biometric login. But along with an optical drive, it offers a 17.3-inch display with full HD resolution, along with performance that’s good enough for everyday use. That’s thanks to a 10th Gen Intel Quad-Core i5-1035G1 processor, 16GB of RAM, and an astounding 512GB SSD. The wholly plastic chassis is unapologetically bulky, measuring 16.4x11x0.98-inches. And it’s heavier than contemporaries like the HP Envy 17 at 6.2 pounds.

Colors on the 1920×1080 resolution screen are fair with image details that look pixelated. Despite the lack of backlighting, the keys are comfortable to use. And the buttonless touchpad glides and taps smoothly, though it’s a little stiff to actually click.

Pros:

  • decent keyboard
  • large 1080p display
  • adequate productivity performance
  • onboard DVD burner

Cons:

  • plastic construction
  • no USB Type-C port

A big reason why you should opt for the Dell Inspiron 14 5000 (5406) 2-in-1 instead of its competitors is for its easy-on-the-eyes 14-inch screen instead of the 13.3-inch you usually get.

While the body can’t match LG Gram 14 2-in-1’s magnesium-alloy construction, the Inspiron 14 5000 (5406) 2-in-1 feels reassuringly solid. The chassis measures 12.9×9.2×0.79-inches, which is slightly trimmer than the 14-inch Acer Spin 3’s 13.2×9.1x.082 body. But it’s heavier than the LG and Acer at 3.75 versus 2.53 each.

Neither of the competitors have a 14-inch touchscreen with IPS, however. Contrast isn’t bad and viewing angles are wide with vivid colors. But like most touch displays, the reflective surface detracts a bit from the experience. You get a backlit keyboard for the price that offers plenty of feedback. The buttonless touchpad is finely textured, which taps and glides smoothly. And the bottom-mounted speakers are adequate enough for watching a Netflix movie on your lap.

Pros:

  • sleek design
  • peppy performance
  • full-size USB-C, USB Type A, HDMI ports

Cons:

  • display could be brighter
  • no Thunderbolt 3 port

One of the biggest differences between the latest version of the Dell Inspiron 15 5000 (5502) and the previous model, besides a “Tiger Lake” chipset are the hinges.

Dell implemented what Asus calls, an “ErgoLift” hinge. This allows the base to rise at a slight angle when you open the lid for a more comfortable typing position with better airflow to keep the laptop cool. The Inspiron model range typically lack the metal and carbon fiber skeleton of the more well-known XPS series. To maintain an affordable price, the chassis of the Inspiron 15 5000 (5502) is made of plastic, which is not better or worse than competing laptops, like the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 and HP Pavilion 15.

Inside is a Core i3-1115G4 CPU, 8GB of RAM, 128GB SSD and integrated Intel UHD Graphics, adding up to a powerful laptop to use for all your daily computing activities.

Pros:

  • 11th Gen Core i3 CPU
  • good performance
  • narrow side bezels
  • long battery life
  • quiet fan noise

Cons:

  • dim display
  • no Thunderbolt support

Inspiron 3000 vs 5000 Comparison

From ultracompacts for the kids to powerful laptops for crunching numbers. Within Dell’s Inspiron line, there’s a torrent of options to choose from. The best place to start? If you’re a brand loyalist, then you’re already familiar with the reliability of the laptops, how the customer service works, and the general quality of the user experience on both fronts.

And if you’re finding your way to Dell for the first time, you should know that the manufacturer has solid machines from the Inspiron line. We used a Dell in college and there’s sure to be one that’ll work for you. Here’s what you should consider when choosing a laptop from the Inspiron Series.

What’s the Inspiron Line?

While XPS is the premium brand and Alienware and the G Series are geared toward gamers. Whether you want a budget laptop, a gaming rig or something in between. You’ll find what you’re looking for within the Inspiron range. This is Dell’s mass-market, mainstream-focused line of laptops. Here you’ll find a device to suit any use case, which means you’ll also find the widest variety of models. Choosing the best laptop from this sub-brand can be a bit of a minefield with so many product names and numbers on offer. Choosing the right Inspiron is easier when you understand what you’ll find in each Series.

3000 Series

If you’re in the market for a great laptop but want to find the lowest-cost portable computer from Dell. The 3000 Series is what you want. But don’t make the mistake of equating low prices with sub-par products. Sure, when shopping for a laptop on a tight budget, there are compromises to make. But Dell does a masterful job at keeping sacrifices to a minimum in order to deliver entry-level laptops with a compelling user experience.

This series also goes from lovely 11-inch convertible models that you can get in a few different colors with AMD-based components. To standard 15 inchers that top out with Intel Core i5 CPUs and superfast NVMe storage, all for less than $600.

There’s even now a 17-inch Inspiron 3000 range, like the big-screen Dell 17 3000 (3493) with a focus on value. While like the higher tier Inspiron 17 5000 series, costs are kept low by making compromises in build materials. All 17-inch 3000 series models are treated to the latest processor that go all the way up to the powerful Core i7-1065G7 with Intel’s Iris Plus graphics.

5000 Series

This Series sits smack dab between the 3000 and 7000 Series where you’d expect it to be. Our recommendation is that unless you’re going into your search for an Inspiron laptop knowing you want an ultra-low-cost device, or a machine approaching the high end. This is likely where you should begin your search. Here you’ll find a sweet spot of great specs, build quality, user experience and ultimately price.

The most significant difference between a 5000 and 3000 Series Inspiron is overall design and construction quality. Handle a 5000 Series Inspiron and you’ll notice everything looks and feels higher quality than a 3000.

You’ll find 13-, 14- and 15-inch models within the 5000 Series. You also have your choice of Intel or AMD-powered machines. Including traditional clamshell and 2-in-1 convertible laptops. 13-inch Dell Inspiron 5000 laptops only come in a clamshell design, while you can get a 14- or 15-inch size as either a notebook or 2-in-1 form factor.

Standout 5000 Series models are the 14-inch notebook and the 14-inch 2-in-1 convertible. Both come with the latest CPU, speedy NVMe storage, options for Intel’s latest integrated graphics and useful features like the latest DDR4 RAM and USB-C ports.

Price

Starting prices for an Inspiron laptop range from $550 to $950. The most expensive 3000 Series laptops approach the more expensive 5000 and even 7000 range. But the vast majority are extremely affordable as far as laptops go.

But considering the wider range of specs and prices makes the 5000 series worth taking a little more time to browse thoroughly. Prices are attractive, with a low entry cost examples as well as a well-priced series with the accent on good value through the range. The least expensive 5000 Series laptops start at $500. So, you should expect to find some cross-over with the 3000 Series,

Specs and Features

As we walk through the specs and features, we find the limitations of the lower-end options. For example, the models with an Intel Core i3 CPU have a much lower boost clock than the ones fortunate enough to have a Core i5 and Core i7 processor. This means Core i3 Inspirons will lag more in multitasking and intensive situations.

At this point in time with the evolution of the internet and more robust software. We find it difficult to recommend any system with only 4GB of memory save for a Chromebook or starter computer system for the kids. Typically, any laptop with just 4GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD should be reserved the kind of user that doesn’t do much with a portable laptop, or store anything locally.

Windows 10 S is the operating system you’ll find on some Inspiron models. Once again, if you’re computing needs are basic, this won’t be a problem. Just keep in mind that if you have the need to branch out of from Microsoft products and use third-party applications. Your options are limited to just what’s available in the Windows Store.

In Summary

If you’re focus is on spending the least amount of money while getting good value. You’ll want to set your sights on the Dell Inspiron 3000 Series. These machines do what they set out to do and do so without the pretense of trying to be more laptop than they are. This helps keeps prices affordable. Are there better options available? In some cases, yes. But Dell’s Inspiron 3000 Series laptops feel decent enough considering the cost with enough performance for basic tasks. Ideally, though, you’ll want to start with the 5000 Series laptops in your quest for an Inspiron. It’s a notch higher than the true budget 3000 Series laptops. But you won’t pay nearly as much for an Inspiron 7000 Series, especially if all you need is a serviceable mainstream laptop.
