MSI Battery Life Explained

As of late, many MSI offerings are on the thin and light echelon of laptop design. The trend of such laptops continues to be for manufacturers to cram larger and larger batteries (up to 60 Whr and beyond) to increase battery performance. Along with those massive batteries, MSI began tinkering with more efficient displays, CPUs and other components. Yielding in some rather impressive results.

1. MSI GS66 Stealth

Battery Life

Gaming laptops are not known for their stellar battery performance. But the latest crop of gaming machines buck that trend. These days it’s not unusual to see gaming laptops hitting the 5 to 6-hour mark. The MSI GS66 Stealth does so at an incredible 6 hours, eclipsing the 4-hour threshold for the premium gaming laptop average of laptops with similar configurations on continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi with a 150-nits of brightness. This is thanks to a 99.9 Whr battery, which is (tongue in cheek) coincidentally the largest portable battery the TSA will allow on an airplane.

Features

The Stealth is expensive, but with good reason. The lofty price nets you a laptop with powerful gaming and performance parts including a powerful H-series Intel Core i7-10850H processor and a VR-ready Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 Max-Q GPU. Throw in a speedy SSD and you’ve got a powerful machine. All that adds up to the perfect combination of performance and endurance with stellar graphics, overall performance and lightning-fast transfer speeds.

2. MSI GT75 Titan

Battery Life

Thanks to MSI’s kitchen sink approach to performance, there’s so much power beneath the massive frame that battery life can’t be any good, right? And you’d be right. The system takes a hit in endurance at just over two hours on continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi as the rundown test. This is less than the 3:15 time for premium gaming laptops with similar specs.

Features

The Titan’s look is imposing and nothing short of stunning. But its what’s under the glossy black aluminum body that matters. It’s paired with MSI’s custom of employing the most powerful components available. It has everything available to it to make it a performance tour-de-force including an Intel Core i9-8950HK CPU and dedicated Nvidia GTX 1080 GPU. There’s plenty of power for gaming and productivity on tap for any hardcore gamer.

3. MSI GE66 Raider

Battery Life

Again, the majority of gaming machines have a finicky relationship with battery life. While there are a few outliers like the gaming laptop above. The MSI GE66 Raider just misses the mark. On continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi with a 150-nits of brightness, the GE66 Raider lasted 5 hours 10 minutes. That’s about 10 minutes shorter than other premium gaming laptops with similar specs.

Features

The GE66 Raider begs the question, can there be such a thing as too much power? The notebook packs the power and speed of a desktop replacement in a 15-inch system. It’s outfitted with an Intel Core i7 CPU and Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 GPU. And you get a whopping 2x2TB SSD serving up blistering speeds. If you’re a gamer in pursuit of power, you need not look any further than the latest entrant to the RTX league of laptops.

Battery Life

You have to remember that this is a beefy workstation complete with a Full HD display instead of 4K. As such the MSI WS65 has an impressive battery life of nearly 7-hours with continuous web surfing over Wi-F at 150 nits of brightness. The category average for workstations with 4K displays and other similar components tested similarly trail at more than an hour behind.

Features

It’s been touted as MSI’s best workstation yet. Beyond the durable chassis is a powerful Intel Core i7-9750H processor and an incredibly powerful Quadro RTX 4000 GPU. With that comes 32 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD. It can hold up to 40 Google Chrome tabs and five 1080p YouTube videos with Spotify in the background with nary a stutter. It’s a fantastically powerful workhorse for a power user.

Battery Life

The Prestige 14 Evo is of course certified through Intel’s Evo platform, which guarantees the laptop at least a nine-hour battery life. But the Prestige 14 Evo surpasses this battery-life minimum by nearly two hours with a runtime of almost 11 hours!

Features

An Intel Evo sticker gives you peace of mind that a laptop has been vetted to meet or exceed high standards for battery life, connectivity, internal hardware and more. The Evo badge is well earned on the MSI Prestige 14 Evo. It’s stuffed with a beefy Intel Core i7-115G7 processor, 16 GB of RAM and a 1TB NVMe SSD. If you’re a content creator, this is your laptop.

Battery Life

The tug of war you usually get between performance and battery life just doesn’t exist here. You’d be forgiven for thinking that with all the power packed into this system battery life would be a dismal disappointment. But with a runtime of slightly over 10 hours, the WS66 defies the stereotype that workstations have to be tethered to a power outlet. This amazing endurance can be credited to an efficient chip, a 1080p instead of a power hungry 4K display and a large battery.

Features

But if you really want the best workstation laptop around, it’s going to cost you. The huge selling point here is how well-rounded the machine is you’re getting. Stellar performance comes from an Intel Core i9 CPU and 64 GB of RAM despite a relatively slim chassis. Adding to the astronomical cost are features you’d expect from a premium enterprise notebook, including a fingerprint sensor, IR camera and a good selection of ports.

Charge Time

Part of the EVO specifications are not just battery life and performance. But charge time. Laptops that bearing this specification need to be able to deliver at least a four-hour runtime on just 30 minutes of charging. MSI includes a multi-voltage adapter, which peaks at a 65-watt delivery at 20 volts. It charges over the Type-C ports.

When you need a quick top up, the lower half of these batteries charge very quickly. You can charge up to 50% in just 34 minutes. This means that such devices meet their Intel Evo ratings.

But it’s not all upside, Evo MSI laptops have about a three-hour charge time to become fully charged. That includes the notebooks sitting at a 98% charge for an entire hour. The charge rate slows dramatically as the notebook gets closer to being full – it takes an extra hour to finish the last two percent. That’s a very long time for 2%.
